People often think a beauty pageant dressing room is all glamour. Trust me - it isn’tIt is controlled chaos.

Hair dryers roaring at full blast. Makeup brushes flying in every direction. Stylists calling for hairspray. Designers making last-minute alterations. Assistants searching frantically for missing earrings. Someone is steaming a gown while someone else is sewing a loose crystal just minutes before showtime.

And somewhere in the middle of that beautiful madness… sat Miss Japan. When she first walked into my chair, she already possessed the elegance and poise that Japanese beauty queens are known for. My job wasn’t to change who she was — it was to help her best features shine under unforgiving stage lights and high-definition cameras.

Every face tells a different story. For Miss Japan, I softened the complexion while adding dimension, sculpted her features without making them look heavy, brightened her eyes so they would sparkle from the back row of the auditorium, and chose tones that complemented both her skin and her national costume. Stage makeup is an illusion; what appears dramatic up close becomes effortless from twenty meters away.

The audience would eventually see a flawless Miss Japan gracefully walking across the stage with a radiant smile. What they would never see were the dozens of hands working behind the curtains, the organised madness, the laughter, the panic, the teamwork, and the countless tiny details that made those few magical minutes possible.

That’s the beauty of our profession.

The spotlight belongs to the queen.

TRANSFORMING A JAPANESE BEAUTY QUEEN

Busy weekend for me as I had the privilege of being a makeup artist at the Mrs Global Universe competition at Forest City in Iskandar, Johor.

I had the pleasure of transforming this ordinary looking beauty from Japan into a beauty queen for her pageant journey! 🇯🇵 We wanted a look that felt incredibly glamorous, confident, and stage-ready while still celebrating her beautiful features.

Here’s a breakdown of how I created her stunning look:

💄 The Makeup:

Glow & Sculpt: We started with a flawless, luminous base, adding a vibrant coral-pink blush swept high on the cheekbones for an instant, youthful lift.

Sultry Eyes: To make her eyes pop under the stage lights, I designed an elongated, smoky almond eye paired with dramatic, winged lashes to completely transform her gaze.

The Perfect Pout: We finished with a bold, sophisticated berry-red lip for that classic, high-glam finish.

👑 The Hair:
We traded her casual, down style for an elegant, intricate updo! The back features a stunning woven design with interlocking braids, while a few soft, wispy tendrils were left around the face to keep the look romantic and soft.

True beauty doesn't age; it evolves. For this gorgeous transformation, our focus was all about creating a soft, lit-from-within glow that feels fresh, hydrated, and effortlessly sophisticated.

We began with a ultra-moisturizing base to give the skin a healthy, supple bounce. Using a precision blending technique under the eyes, we swept away shadows and replaced them with seamless light.

For the eyes, we chose a romantic palette of muted rose and delicate champagne shimmer — tones that perfectly complement her warmth and bring a bright, youthful twinkle to her expression.

A soft berry-rose cream blush was blended upward on the cheekbones to naturally lift the face, paired with a matching satin lip for a perfectly balanced, monochromatic finish.

Looking to elevate a classic cut? It’s all in the texture.
For this look, we took a traditional short-to-medium cut and infused it with dynamic, modern movement.

By utilizing a precision multi-directional styling technique, we built a soft, structured volume right from the roots. Instead of stiff, uniform curls, we crafted seamless "S" waves that blend into one another perfectly, ensuring excellent crown coverage and a balanced silhouette from every angle. The front fringe was swept with a gentle, relaxed curve to frame his face and complement his glasses effortlessly.

The result? A highly touchable, sophisticated style that feels both lived-in and perfectly tailored. Perfect for day-to-day wear or a sharp night out.

Today was all about the bridal trial - a special opportunity for a bride-to-be to explore different looks, discover what suits her best, and envision how she wants to look and feel on one of the most important days of her life.

A bridal trial is much more than a makeup and hairstyling session. It is a collaborative journey where ideas are shared, preferences are discussed, and every detail is carefully considered. From the wedding gown and jewellery to the venue, theme, and personal style, each element plays a part in creating a look that feels uniquely hers.

During today’s session, we experimented with soft, romantic makeup designed to enhance natural features while creating a radiant bridal glow. Different techniques were demonstrated and discussed, allowing the bride to see how various styles complemented her complexion, facial features, and overall vision for the day.

For the hair, we explored elegant styling options, creating soft curls and volume before crafting a romantic half-up, half-down hairstyle with delicate braids and flowing waves. The trial allowed us to assess what worked best for her hair texture, face shape, comfort level, and desired bridal aesthetic.

One of the most rewarding parts of a bridal trial is the consultation itself. It provides a chance to understand the bride’s expectations, answer questions, address concerns, and fine-tune every detail so that there are no surprises on the actual wedding day. By the end of the session, both stylist and bride leave with a clear plan and the confidence that everything will come together beautifully.

Using an automatic curling iron to build soft, bouncy volume, we created an intricate, braided half-up, half-down hairstyle. The delicate side-plaits sweep back into a seamless twist, allowing her gorgeous length to cascade in romantic waves—perfect for showcasing jewelry while keeping the hair beautifully secure from day to night.
