Freshwater Pearl Harvesting Brief Process

Once mature freshwater mussels are carefully retrieved from freshwater ponds and lakes, each shell is gently prised open by hand to reveal the soft flesh inside.

Workers separate the mussel meat from the shell lining, picking out every tiny pearl embedded within the mantle tissue one by one. After extraction, the pearls carry traces of mucus, organic residue and soft tissue fragments.

They are thoroughly rinsed with clean, cool freshwater to strip away surface grime, before moving on to gentle buffing and sorting to bring out their natural subtle lustre.
