Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) is a rare viral disease caused by the mpox virus, which is part of the same family as the smallpox virus but typically less severe. Here’s an overview of the disease:
Key Facts About Mpox
Did you know that Mpox was first identified in 1958 in monkeys used for research, hence the name.
• The first human case was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
2. Transmission:
Can be transferred from Animal-to-Human: Through contact with infected animals, such as rodents or primates, via bites, scratches, or handling meat from these animals.
• Human-to-Human: Through close contact, including:
• Skin-to-skin contact with lesions.
• Respiratory droplets (prolonged face-to-face contact).
• Contaminated objects (bedding, towels, etc.).
3. Symptoms (usually appear within 5-21 days of exposure):
• Fever, chills, and fatigue.
• Headache, muscle aches, and back pain.
• Swollen lymph nodes (a distinguishing feature from smallpox).
• Rash that evolves through several stages: macules → papules → vesicles → pustules → scabs.
4. Disease Course:
• Generally lasts 2-4 weeks.
• Most people recover fully, but complications can occur in severe cases, particularly in immunocompromised individuals, children, or those with underlying health conditions.
Prevention
• Avoid contact with animals that could harbor the virus.
• Use personal protective equipment (PPE) when caring for infected individuals.
• Practice good hygiene (handwashing, disinfecting surfaces).
• Get vaccinated if in a high-risk group (some smallpox vaccines are effective against mpox).
Treatment
• There is no specific treatment for mpox, but it can be managed with:
• Supportive care (hydration, pain relief, treating secondary infections).
• Antiviral medications like tecovirimat (for severe cases or complications).
