Oil Export Crisis Looms: South Sudan Faces Economic Collapse Amid RSF Attacks.
May 10, 2025.
JUBA……..South Sudan's oil exports are at risk of imminent suspension after recent drone strikes by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) severely damaged key infrastructure in Port Sudan, according to a warning from the Sudanese government.
In a letter to South Sudan’s Undersecretary of Petroleum, Deng Lual, Sudan’s Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum, Mohieddien Naim, highlighted that attacks on May 8 and 9 have compromised essential oil export facilities. This warning comes just days after South Sudan resumed crude exports through Port Sudan after months of disruption due to the ongoing civil war in Sudan.
The most significant attack occurred on May 9, when drones targeted Petrolines for Crude Oil Company (PETCO)’s Pump Station No. 5 in al-Hudi, causing extensive damage to this crucial facility. While maintenance teams are currently on-site, Sudanese officials have indicated that the risk of halting export operations is extremely high.
A day earlier, another drone strike hit a major diesel depot in White Nile state, operated by Bashayer Pipeline Company (BAPCO), which supplies diesel for operational needs.
Additionally, Sudan reported attacks on ports and airports used by PETCO and BAPCO for importing essential chemicals and materials, resulting in stranded shipments and further operational disruptions.
The situation is exacerbated by damage to electricity substations, including one that powers BAPCO’s marine terminal, leading to outages that hinder the simultaneous loading of crude oil. Fuel depots and storage facilities in Port Sudan have also been affected, raising concerns about a critical fuel shortage necessary for oil transport operations.
In light of these developments, Sudanese authorities have directed both PETCO and BAPCO to prepare a rapid response plan for a potential shutdown of oil facilities if attacks continue.
The letter stated, “W
