_Urgent Notice_

About three days ago, some senior SPLM-IG leaders and senior SSPDF generals in Juba distributed money among themselves at night for a mission known only to them. However, the SPLA-IO intelligence unit has discovered a planned coup plot to remove President Kiir and assassinate Dr. Machar, alongside other senior political figures (from IG) who would be threats to their hostile takeover.

This tribally motivated move by the coup plotters is not only aimed at jeopardizing the imminent return to dialogue, as per the AU resolution of February 2026, but also at positioning a replacement for President Kiir from a particular identity to maintain power and control.

The SPLA-IO would like to inform the public, especially those in Juba, to be vigilant as the SPLM-IG is planning another round of ethnic violence in Juba, similar to and worse than that of December 2013, while executing the coup plot. The SPLA-IO will respond accordingly in defense of innocent civilians.

STATEMENT CONDEMNING THE ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON DR. RIEK MACHAR TENY'S LIFE

We unequivocally condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the reported assassination attempt on the life of H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny, the First Vice President of South Sudan, on the night of April 9, 2026, in Juba. Credible reports indicate that armed elements attempted to breach his residence, resulting in an exchange of fire, loss of life, and injuries. These developments are deeply alarming and demand an urgent, independent investigation.

Any attempt on the life of a political leader or protected person under state custody constitutes a grave violation of both domestic and international law, amounting to potential extrajudicial ex*****on, torture, or crimes against humanity. The State bears an absolute, non-derogable obligation to safeguard the life, dignity, and security of all persons under its control, regardless of political affiliation.

We treat with utmost seriousness the circulating reports that this plot was foiled at the last moment. Such allegations, including incendiary rhetoric attributed to elements within the security establishment, point to a dangerous erosion of command responsibility and the rule of law. The invocation of ethnic identifiers, such as "Dinka Soldiers," in connection with this incident is particularly reckless and risks inflaming communal tensions in an already fragile environment.

No political objective can justify the weaponization of identity or the orchestration of violence against opposition figures. Accountability must be individual, lawful, and transparent. We call on the government of South Sudan to ensure the safety and security of Dr. Riek Machar Teny and all opposition leaders, and to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into this incident.

First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny is expected to return to his office next week, according to a confirmed source. Citizens are preparing for a grand welcome.

Before resuming his duties, Dr. Machar will review positions allocated to the SPLM-IO party under the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

The positions targeted for review include:

14. Governor of Western Equatoria State
15. Governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal (Wau)

17. Deputy Governor of Eastern Equatoria State

National Assembly and Council of States positions:
1. Speaker of the Council of States
2. 1st Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and Chief Whip
3. State Speakers and Deputies allocated to SPLM-IO

These positions are expected to be relieved as part of the review process, according to an SPLM-IO official.
