BREAKING: SSPDF orders UNMISS troops to leave ADefencethin 72 hours

The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) has instructed United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) forces to evacuate their Temporary Operating Base in Akobo within three days.

According to a statement from SSPDF spokesperson L*l Ruai Koang, this order follows the completion of the first phase of “Operation Enduring Peace.” The military indicates that Akobo town and nearby areas will be the focus of the second phase of military operations.

The directive also requires UN agencies, NGOs, and staff to depart the area within the same period. Civilians in Akobo and surrounding villages are advised to relocate to SSPDF-controlled zones or to safer locations to avoid collateral damage.

This notice was given in advance to facilitate evacuation before the next phase of military activities begins operations.

The Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, H.E. Lt. Gen Charles Madut Akol, has issued Gubernatorial Decrees 𝐍𝐨. 𝟏/𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, 𝐍𝐨 𝟐/𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, 𝐍𝐨 𝟑/𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐨. 𝟒/𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 affecting some changes in the State Government as hereunder;

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬:

In exercise of the powers conferred upon me by the Republican Decree 𝐍𝐨 𝟒𝟒𝟑/𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 read together with article 99 (2) (a) of the Transitional Constitution of Northern Bhar El Ghazal State, 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟐 as amended. 𝐈, 𝐋𝐭. The Episcopal Church of South Sudan announced the death of retired Bishop Nathaniel Garang Anyieth on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, in Nairobi, Kenya.

In a statement to the nation, Archbishop Justin Badi Arama, the church’s primate, said:

“With a heavy heart, the province of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan announces the passing of the retired Bishop Nathaniel Garang, which occurred this morning in Nairobi. The late Bishop Garang was consecrated in 1984 and became the first Diocesan Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Bor. He served his people with courage, humility, and a pastoral heart.”

Archbishop Arama added:

“He gave hope and spiritual guidance to the people of South Sudan throughout the liberation struggle. We request prayers for his immediate family and for the arrangements to bring his remains back home. May his soul rest in peace and rise in glory.”
