A few brief remembrances of the life of Rt. Rev. Nathaniel Garang Anyieth Jangdit, Bishop Emeritus of the Episcopal Diocese of Bor, our father in God who have died on Tuesday, February 24, 2026 in Nairobi due to his long illness. Bishop Nathaniel was born in 1940 in the village of Werkok, Makuach in Bor County of Jonglei State. He was priested into Episcopal order in 1975. He was consecrated in 1984 as Assistant Bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Rumbek and based in Bor Area. He was enthroned in 1997 in Narus, Eastern Equartoria as diocesan Bishop of Bor and retired in 2011.

I have a unique bond with him, just like any other priest in the Episcopal Church who was directly supervised by him, and he has instilled in me a spirit of fortitude, tolerance, and tenacity. Nathaniel was a man who was faithful, pious, and obedient to his calling. When it came to administrative things, he was calm and gentle. Under his leadership, we had both beneficial and detrimental effects. He was able to gently lead the church till his dignified retirement. He loves us, knows us inside and out, and has treated us like his own children and servants of God not just as church employees.

He was a talented vocalist and a powerful speaker of the Word. He undoubtedly fought a good battle because, according to the apostle Paul, "Fight the good fight of faith" (1 Timothy 6:12) refers to actively enduring in spiritual life by abiding by God's Word, opposing sin, and clinging to convictions in the face of emotions, situations, or resistance. Nathaniel has done exactly that. A few of his accomplishments among others that come to my mind are listed below.

1. Nathaniel has essentially succeeded in spreading the message of Christ and evangelizing the Sudanese, particularly the Jieng and Nuer communities. Following the sons of Archibald Shaw, who made every effort to reach out to many places to save souls but were hampered by circumstances that affected their efforts due to a lack of strong evangelis

OFFICIAL ALERT TO THE BOR COMMUNITY

Dear sons and daughters of the Bor Community,

This evening, we received credible and trusted information from Pibor indicating that one of the cattle camps currently located in Baidit and Jalle may be targeted for a raid tonight by armed Murle criminals.

We have already communicated this information to some members of the affected areas. However, we strongly urge everyone to ensure that this message reaches all community members in Bor and surrounding areas without delay.

We call upon community leaders, youth, and local authorities to remain vigilant, take necessary precautionary measures, and prioritize the safety of lives and property. Timely communication and preparedness are critical at this moment.

Additionally, we appeal to all of you to keep our people in your prayers, asking God to protect our community and to turn the hearts of those planning violence toward peace.

Let us stand united, alert, and supportive of one another during this critical time.

May God protect Bor Community.

🔴 BREAKING NEWS

Salva Kiir’s Administration Rejects Calls to Release Riek Machar

South Sudan’s government has firmly rejected international calls for the immediate release of suspended First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, insisting that his case is a matter for the judiciary — not political negotiation.

Information Minister Ateny Wek Ateny said the executive will not interfere in court proceedings, stressing that Machar is being tried by a competent court and that the final decision will come from the judiciary.

The response follows calls raised during an African Union C5 meeting, where Nigeria urged Machar’s “immediate and unconditional release.” Juba dismissed the demand as the position of an individual member state, not the collective stance of the AU.

Despite rising political tensions, the government maintains that national elections will proceed as planned in December.

🌍 SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IS A PUBLIC HEALTH PRIORITY!!!!!!

Improper solid waste disposal remains one of the major environmental health challenges affecting our communities today. Accumulated garbage in residential areas, markets, and along streets creates a conducive environment for the breeding of flies, mosquitoes, and rodents. These vectors play a significant role in the transmission of communicable diseases such as Cholera, typhoid fever, and other diarrheal illnesses that continue to burden our health systems.

From a public and environmental health perspective, solid waste management involves the systematic control of waste generation, segregation, storage, collection, transportation, treatment, and final disposal in a manner that protects human health and the environment. When waste is poorly managed, it contaminates water sources, pollutes soil, blocks drainage systems during rainy seasons, and increases the risk of flooding and disease outbreaks.

Segregation of waste at the household level is a fundamental preventive measure. Organic waste should be separated from plastics and hazardous materials to facilitate composting and recycling. Waste should always be stored in covered containers to prevent vector breeding and environmental contamination. Community participation in sanitation activities and adherence to municipal waste regulations are essential components of sustainable waste management.

As a Public and Environmental Health professional, I strongly advocate for increased community awareness, behavioral change communication, strengthening of municipal waste collection systems, strict enforcement of environmental health laws, and promotion of recycling and composting initiatives. Solid waste management is not merely about maintaining cleanliness; it is a critical disease prevention strategy and a foundation for sustainable community development.

Let us work together to protect our environment and safeguard public health. Majok Aper Gop
