After leaving the reserve, Dolph entered the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and received a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering[7][13]. However, he was not destined to serve the entire required period in the combat swimmer unit: during the service, he received a serious physical injury, which prevented further service in the combat unit. After graduating from school, Lundgren went to the USA. After conscription, he was sent to undergo a course of tactical, special physical and diving training at the Swedish Navy Special Forces Training Center, which he graduated in 1979. After this, Lundgren was assigned to serve in the 1st Swedish Marine Regiment [sv] (Swedish: Amfibieregementet), where he served in the underwater sabotage unit (Swedish: Kustjägare)

In 1977, Lundgren won the Swedish championship title, which he held for three years, and in 1979 he took part in the World Championships. Despite the fact that at that time Lundgren only had a green belt, and at the championship the minimum requirement was to have a brown belt, Dolph attributed to himself an extra degree of skill at the registration of participants and borrowed a belt from one of his comrades[3]. Having knocked out two opponents, Dolph went up against the favorite of the tournament - the Japanese Makota Nakamura, an experienced fighter with a second dan black belt, who was 17 kilograms heavier than the young Swede [3]. In a difficult fight, Nakamura repeatedly used “dirty” techniques, but even so he managed to win only in the extra round by a controversial judge’s decision[3]. This fight was the hardest for Nakamura, who eventually won the championship. Dolph himself, despite the loss, was very pleased with his performance and a year later became captain of the Swedish karate team[4]. In 1980, Lundgren won the most significant title of his sports career, winning the British Open, which he defended a year later.[

It was the difficult relationship with his father that became the reason why Dolph decided to engage in contact sports and go to the gym[11], although before that he was a notorious and allergy-prone teenager who was “embarrassed about his frail body”[4]. Having tried himself in judo and goju-ryu karate[7], Dolph settled on Kyokushinkai and “began to train like a man possessed”

In addition to cinema, Lundgren has achieved significant success in other areas: Master of Chemical Engineering (University of Technology Sydney, 1982) and a Fulbright Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dolph twice won the British Open Championship (1980, 1981)[3], became the Australian Champion (1982) in Kyokushinkai, and was also captain of the US Olympic pentathlon team.[4] At his peak, standing 193 centimeters tall and weighing 111 kilograms[2], Lundgren had outstanding musculature and is to this day a well-known figure in the world of bodybuilding[5].

Becoming famous in 1985 after playing the role of Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in the fourth part of “Rocky”, Lundgren starred in more than 50 films, the most famous of which are “Showdown in Little Tokyo”, “Universal Soldier”, “Masters of the Universe”, “ Joshua Tree", "The Punisher" and the "Expendables" series[2]. In 2004, Lundgren made his debut as a director with the film The Defender, and subsequently led the work on the films The Mechanic, The Missionary, Dangerous Tour and Killing Machine.
