Cicada broods XIII and XIX haven't emerged at the same time since 1803 and won't again until 2245. What a time to be alive!

At over 90 decibels male cicada calls can be as loud as a lawnmower.

Two broods of cicadas will be emerging this year as early as May. The numbers might be in the trillions. Although they don't pose a threat to humans or pets they can damage shrubs and small trees. It is recommended that you hold off on planting until next year. If you have plants you want to protect you can cover them with netting. There is no recommended pesticide for cicada control.

I would like to remind my neighbors and valued customers that feeding wildlife doesn't just attract unwanted pests. When animals gather in close proximity for handouts it increases the chance of disease transmission. Wild animals have specialized diets and become malnourished when they rely on peanuts and bird seed. Also, wild animals will fight over access to food which leads to injury and death. I understand wanting to help your local critters and the urge to observe them. I don't recommend it but, if you must do it, please limit the amount of bird seed you put out at one time and clean your bird baths frequently. You might want to consider planting a pollinator garden and native grasses if you want to enrich your local ecosystem.
