I get asked this question a lot...

Is Laser Hair removal safe on dark skin???

Yes, if the right Laser is used and the operator is experienced in using lasers. For those with brown and black skin I recommend you ONLY use a Nd:YAG laser.

Lasers work by beaming intense light at the root of the hair follicle by targeting the pigment (#melanin) in the hair. Since they target pigment, the best results used to be in people with fair skin and dark hair.

YAg lasers are more sophisticated. They penetrate deeper in the skin and bypass the pigment in the skin and only focus on the pigment in the root of the hair. This makes it the safest laser for Black and Brown skin.

So always ask what type of laser your provider has for laser hair removal. If you have black or brown skin then ask if they have a Yag laser. If not just move on.

This 21 year patient came to the office due to his cystic acne. He had been struggling with it for more than 5 years. He made changes to his diet but still was not able to control his acne.

His acne continued to get worse which severely affected his self esteem and just made him feel hopeless. He came to me over the summer to see if I could help him improve his acne before before going back to college.

With the help of @skin.caresam we came up with a skincare regimen for him . We counseled him on his diet and explained to him that acne is a condition that needs to manage and emphasized patience.

We are so happy to see the improvements he has made in 3 months. He is not out of the woods yet but we know he will continue to see improvements and when ready we will tackle his #hyperpigmentation.

Remember acne takes time to improve but it can be done.

We use Botox in the office to treat this. Botox Placed in the Masseter muscle leads to relaxation of the Masseter muscle which is one of the muscles of mastication (chewing).

Relaxing this muscle will not affect your ability to chew but it will relieve pain associated with teeth grinding.

For some, teeth grinding leads to enlargement of this muscle which changes the shape of their face to a more masculine appearance.

This treatment thus also has the added benefit of feminizing a boxy jaw.
