Natural deodorant with baking soda works beautifully for some people.
And for others… their skin reacts almost immediately.
Redness. Burning. Irritation.
Most people assume the ingredient itself is the problem. But sometimes the reaction is actually telling you something deeper is happening on the skin.
Your skin normally stays slightly acidic.
That acidity keeps your microbiome balanced.
So when sweat rich in ammonia meets an alkaline ingredient like baking soda, the skin environment can shift even further away from its natural acidic balance.
For example:
If the skin microbiome contains higher levels of ammonia-producing bacteria like Staphylococcus species, the combination of sweat and alkalinity can increase irritation.
Another possibility is higher ammonia in sweat.
Ammonia is one of the compounds the body can release through sweat when it accumulates in circulation. When that sweat meets an alkaline ingredient like baking soda, it can push the skin environment even further away from its normal acidic balance.
That’s when irritation can appear.
So sometimes a reaction to baking soda isn’t simply “sensitive skin.”
It can be a signal about skin microbiome balance and sweat chemistry.
Understanding that changes how we look at deodorant.
Sometimes a reaction to baking soda isn’t simply “sensitive skin.”
It can be your skin telling you something about its microbiome balance and sweat chemistry. If baking soda deodorants have ever irritated your skin, I’m curious:
Did you notice redness, burning, or itching?
Let me know below. Truly yours Z.

POV: the objects you reach for daily reflect how seriously you take yourself.
Even deodorant has standards.
When I finally got tired of trying “clean” deodorants that didn’t live up to their promises, I decided to make my own. I wanted something that actually worked — something that kept me fresh without compromising my health or the integrity of my skin.
After months of experimenting with ingredients and perfecting the formula, I started sharing my natural deodorant with friends and family. Their reactions were immediate and heartfelt — they loved it. It worked for everyone, even those with the most sensitive skin. That’s when I realized I had created something worth sharing beyond my circle. Deodorant felt like the right place to begin this journey because it’s such a personal and essential part of our daily routine. It’s one of those clean skincare products that truly matters — we use it every single day, directly on the skin, and yet it’s often the most overlooked. I wanted to create a formula that worked with the body’s natural microbiome, not against it. One that balanced protection, purity, and performance without compromise.

Let’s talk about something real: odor is personal.
If you’ve ever noticed that our deodorant works differently on different days—or differently from person to person—you’re not imagining it. Body odor isn’t just about sweat. It’s influenced by what’s happening inside the body.
A few key factors that can intensify odor:
• Diet – Foods like garlic, onions, spices, alcohol, and certain proteins release sulfur compounds that exit through the skin
• Metabolic health – Blood sugar imbalance, detox overload, or sluggish liver pathways can amplify scent
• Hormonal shifts – Stress, cortisol, and hormonal fluctuations change how sweat interacts with skin bacteria
• Hydration & mineral balance – Dehydration concentrates waste products, making odor stronger
• Microbiome differences – Everyone’s skin bacteria are unique—and they determine how sweat smells
Our deodorant works by supporting the skin’s natural balance, not masking the body with harsh fragrances or blocking sweat completely. That means your results may vary depending on what your body is processing that day.
✨ A stronger odor doesn’t mean the deodorant “isn’t working.”
✨ It often means your body is communicating something deeper.
Zema & Co. is designed to work with your biology—not override it. And when your internal terrain is supported, the results speak for themselves.
Your body is intelligent.
We’re just here to honor it.

We were told odor means something is wrong.
So we scrubbed.
Blocked.
Covered.
Controlled.
But what if odor isn’t failure —
what if it’s feedback?
Your body is constantly communicating.
Sweat is one of its languages.
When we silence it, the signal doesn’t disappear.
It just gets louder.
Zema & Co was born from a simple shift:
stop fighting the body — start listening to it.
This is where the story begins.
