Where will you be this Christmas?
Many are talking about Detty December! What exactly is Detty December?

Let’s help you out so you can prepare accordingly.

Detty December in Lagos is a year-end cultural and party phenomenon — a festive period throughout December (often starting late November and stretching into early January) when the city becomes one of the most vibrant and energetic places in Nigeria (and arguably Africa).

🎉 What it is
• A festive cultural season celebrated with parties, concerts, street events, weddings, reunions, beach outings, club nights, food festivals, and more — basically nonstop social gatherings and celebrations leading up to Christmas and New Year.
• The phrase “Detty” is Nigerian Pidgin slang derived from “dirty”, implying a wild, unrestrained, fun-filled and non-stop period of revelry.
• Lagos, with its huge population, booming entertainment industry, music scene, and nightlife, is widely considered the epicenter of Detty December.

🎶 Why Lagos?
• Lagos attracts locals, diasporans (often called “IJGBs” — I Just Got Back), and international visitors — many return home for the holidays, boosting energy and spending in the city.
• The city hosts major concerts and festivals — including headline shows by local and global musicians, corporate events, and curated entertainment experiences.
• Beyond nightlife, there are cultural gatherings, family reunions, weddings, food festivals and beach hangouts.

💃 What to expect
• High energy and crowded venues — from clubs and concert arenas to beach parties and rooftop events.
• Traffic and busy travel infrastructure — with Lagos swelling well above its usual population due to all the returnees and visitors.
• Economic impact — local businesses, hotels, restaurants and tourism all benefit significantly.

📅 Typical timeline
• Early December through New Year — with the majority of major concerts and “Detty December Fest” style events clustered around mid to late December.

In short, Detty December is Lagos’s biggest yearly party season — a blend of family time, reunions, music culture, celebrations, and social life turned all the way up.
