A fun fact: the reason alcohol is so widely associated with this holiday is because restrictions set by the church for consuming alcohol were historically lifted for this day! Cheers to that!

❶ Buy only the real thing, from bonafide retailers.

❷ Don’t sniff right from the bottle; you'll mostly just get is a whiff of alcohol, the dilutant.

❸ Spray or dab fragrance on a blotting strip, your wrist, the back of your hand, or inner elbow. Wave your hand about for a moment to let the alcohol evaporate. This begins the dry-down.

❹ It's best to test only one fragrance at a time, at most four in widely spaced places on your skin. The sense of smell is finely tuned and can get tired or confused. Many perfumeries have small jars of coffee beans for you to sniff between fragrances to cleanse your olfactory sense.

❺ Wait a Minute. The first bloom of scent on the skin is the top note. It’s all-important for the sheer pleasure of putting on
the fragrance, but it does not last long.

❻ Check the fragrance(s) again in about 30 mins and then an hour. This is the longer-lasting middle note, which will be the one that lingers.

❼ Several hours later, see what’s left of the fragrance. It may be a hint of muskiness or a tinge of woodiness. This is the base note, foundation which sustained the fragrance and the one that may cling for up to 8 hours.
