Today, December 3rd, was International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a global observance dedicated to promoting the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities.
Since 1992, this day has been a vital reminder of the importance of inclusivity and the need to break down barriers that prevent equal opportunities for all.
This year’s theme, “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future,” highlights the essential role that persons with disabilities play in shaping a better world. It calls for their active participation in decision-making processes and emphasizes their contributions to innovation, especially in the areas of digital and assistive technologies.
As the UN Secretary, General António Guterres has pointed out, persons with disabilities disproportionately bear the effects of global crises due to systemic discrimination and barriers to accessing basic rights and services. Addressing these challenges requires amplifying their voices, supporting their leadership, and building a world that truly values equity and inclusion.
The World Health Organization has also used this day to remind us that persons with disabilities make up 16% of the global population yet are often excluded from leadership roles in sectors like healthcare. Advancing health equity is not just a goal—it’s a necessity for a sustainable and inclusive future.
As we reflect on this year’s theme, let’s commit to fostering a world that celebrates diversity and ensures that persons with disabilities have the tools, opportunities, and platforms they need to thrive.
How will you take action to support inclusivity today and every day?
