Ron Prince started at Tuskegee University at 17 and is finally graduating with the class of 2026 — and the 60 years that passed between those two moments are the part of this story worth understanding. Most people who leave university before completing a degree do so because of circumstances, not because of a failure of ability or desire. Life interrupts. Economic necessity redirects priorities. Family obligations arrive. Military service. Career opportunities that do not require the credential. The reasons vary, but the common thread is that the degree becomes something deferred rather than abandoned — an unfinished chapter that follows a person quietly for decades. For Ron Prince, the chapter remained open for 60 years. The decision to return and complete it at this stage of life is not driven by career necessity. At the point where most people his age are well into retirement, the calculation is entirely different. This is about finishing something that was started — about the particular integrity of returning to an incomplete commitment and seeing it through regardless of what practical benefit it now provides.Tuskegee University carries its own historical weight in that context. Founded in 1881 by Booker T. Washington, it has been a center of Black education, excellence, and community for well over a century. Walking across that stage as a member of the Class of 2026 connects Ron Prince's individual story to an institution whose significance extends far beyond any single graduating class. He started there as a 17-year-old. He will walk that stage at 77.The credential was always within reach. He simply had to decide, six decades later, that it was time to finish what he started. On May 9, that decision becomes official.
