Kwanza Jones made history this week, becoming the first Black woman to be a majority owner of an MLB team.
But that wasn’t the only way Jones and her husband, José Feliciano, blazed a trail with their purchase of the San Diego Padres. Feliciano will be the first Puerto Rican to be a majority owner of an MLB team. And the deal itself is the most expensive in baseball history — $3.9 billion.
Jones is a singer who began her career at Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater. She has since released over half a dozen singles that have made the Billboard Hot Dance Club and Dance/Electronic charts. She is a Princeton University graduate and in 2020 successfully advocated for her alma mater to take President Woodrow Wilson’s name off of school buildings. Wilson was an apologist for slavery and segregated federal government offices.
Jones’ husband, Feliciano, is a businessman and investor who made his fortune in private equity. Feliciano holds ultimate legal authority over the team. However, Jones will have just as much say as her husband in the future of the San Diego Padres, according to Feliciano.
At their first news conference as team owners, Jones and Feliciano came onstage to a new single written by Jones titled: “We All In.”
“We gonna win. We gonna win. We’re going to win. We’re going to win it all,” Jones said, quoting the lyrics of her new song.
The San Diego Padres haven’t reached the World Series since 1999, and they haven’t won one in their 57-year history. But Jones didn’t let that dull her shine.
