As I finish up my con crunch, I figured I’d show a little BTS of building the Kalina Ann! I have a few touch ups to make before I bring this baby back on Friday 💜. Details are in each slide, so keep scrolling right to see each step of the process!

I started this project using some 1-1/2 PVC pipe. The full size pipe was too big to try to cut + haul, so I asked the supply store workers if they had any leftover smaller sections from custom cuts, and I got two pieces at a discount that ended up being the perfect length. I stood in the fittings sections for a good 45 minutes to find the right connector and end caps.

I usually work off of blueprints, but I couldn’t find any templates online already, so I had to make my own sketches based off some 3D renderings I found online. One of my favorite ways to sketch and make templates is with gift wrapping paper! I always keep leftover wrapping paper from the holidays, or get it on clearance at the end of the season.

To attach the shoulder strap, I found a kit meant for hanging framed, and secured the straps directly into the walls of the PVC. This was easily the most difficult part, as I had to use a hand screw driver because I don’t have a power drill yet….if anyone needs any last minute birthday ideas….

First part of foam constructed! I used 5mm for the blade, with a 2mm layer on top. The blade is attached to the body with wire inside for extra support.

More 5mm foam to make the slider section, and the handle is leftover 1/2” pvc from the scraps bucket.

Plastidipped that bad boy!

Top piece fully plastidiped + hand painted. The grip was also hand carved with custom blueprints.

Shortly after, I got into crunch mode to make the top box piece. It was constructed fully with 5mm Eva foam, and 36 individual 1mm triangles overlaid.

The two pieces disconnect for ease of transport! This is the first time after painting that I fully connected the prop and was able to see the full scale. I am 5’3” and from base to tip of blade, it rounds out at about ~5’5” total.

First try on! This was the night before debuting at Southern Fried Gaming Expo. I can’t wait to show this off again and Dragoncon, and appreciate if you
