DECARCERATING CARE::
This Monday, our founder will sit on
conversation. With this fifth installment in the ongoing series, they start the Decarcerating Care lifecycle over. They’ll reflect on the ways in which our landscape has intensified since the series began, bringing both new challenges and new opportunities to cultivate autonomy, self-determination, and liberation for those experiencing crisis and distress.
“This fifth installment will examine how systems of surveillance intersect with mental health and disability by reviewing historical examples and exposing present-day iterations. A panel of mad and disabled community members, mental health practitioners, activists, and scholars will explore responses within and adjacent to our mental health system that often result in coercion, confinement, and incarceration. Drawing on deep lineages of resistance – particularly by Black, Brown, Indigenous, disabled, mad, and q***r communities – we will uplift ongoing resistance and movement efforts that respond to these covert forms of control and prioritize community-based frames for safety in pursuit of collective healing.”
Panelists: Idil Abdillahi, Azza Altiraifi, Yana Calou from Trans Lifeline, TL Lewis, and Shawna Murray-Browne in a conversation moderated by Selima Jumarali
Access: ASL + CART provided
Donations: The suggested donation for this event is $10, though no one will be turned away. IDHA is a small organization that runs largely on community support — we appreciate donations of any size for those who have capacity to give.

Aye you!! When is the last time you played? Like truly allowed yourself the space to connect to your child-self WITHOUT being prompted in your work or in parenting?
No really… (reply below!!)
As healers, we have the privilege of holding space for people through transformative experiences. During this season, especially, we need to be intentional about caring for ourselves as we care for others.
There’s lots of research that shows that play helps release the mind and body from the impacts of stress and trauma. And we know that movement, breathwork, laughter, and creativity help prevent and repair burnout. Restorative Play offers all of that and whatever else you bring to the time we have together!
We love and admire passion for play and liberation so jumped at the opportunity to co-sponsor this DOPE event!!!
We know you might still be thinking that play is for kids… but come play with us, anyway!!! Let’s grow together!!!!
It’s free, but there is limited space so registration is required. You can find all the details on Eventbrite:

Meet JaVon – an artist, play practitioner, and the founder of Jubilee Counseling and Wellness, LLC in Baltimore, MD. She seeks to affirm the full humanity of oppressed people across all her work. JaVon believes the path to liberation must include joy and connection! Through Jubilee, she provides opportunities for people to reconnect with themselves and each other through embodied practices centering art and play.
In May, JaVon will be facilitating an outdoor mindfulness workshop series that centers movement and art. This workshop is designed to teach or strengthen mindfulness skills while connecting folks with the natural environment, themselves, and each other. It is not an art class, but a space to practice active meditation skills. Check out the details at bit.ly/mindandart and Registration is open through May 1.
Our Therapy That Liberates community member Seante Hatcher will join JaVon to facilitate community play as part of the Baltimore Ceasefire Weekend on May 6th at Lake Montebello from 6:30 pm 8:00 pm. This event is for all ages, free and open to the public, and will include all your favorite playground games! Please bring a mask to wear when in close contact with others.
