Did you know? People who are less resilient going into a traumatic experience are more likely to experience posttraumatic growth? It's the experience of the bending and breaking that allows the biggest opportunity for new growth to form. I am grateful that today I can see the new growth the storms have given me in my life, and because of that, the ability to see a deeper meaning in my experiences. Thanks to Stephen Joseph for the amazing book, What Doesn't Kill Us.

I used to think progress and growth meant I should be experiencing less struggle and negative feelings or experiences. I have learned the truth is that progress means feeling better equipped to handle these things when they come. My definition of success changed. It became simply to be myself, experience my feelings, grow, learn, and move forward. True thriving means experiencing a full range of emotions and appreciating what they each bring to the table, and trusting myself to experience without being overcome.

Research shows that our brains have a built in negativity bias. For survival, it has been more important to notice and react to the bad experiences than to savor the good ones. Painful experiences tend to be more memorable and longer lasting than happy ones. However, we don't have to be victims of this bias! We can work to counteract this natural way of noticing the negative more. In relationships and experiences, it takes about 5 positive interactions to outweigh a single bad one, so being intentional about how we invest our time, interact with others, and what is building vs. draining us each day is key. Look for and write down good things you see each day. Share them. Never underestimate the power of small things! Spend an extra 30 seconds really savoring your good experiences. Feel it in your body and soul. Having a bad day? Choose positive activities or people to tip the scales.
