Induction is never the answer. Culturally rooted approach is.

As doulas, most of us are very familiar with the ARRIVE Study. In fact, many of us have found it difficult to support clients desiring a natural birth since the ARRIVE study was published. Anecdotally, many of us felt induction of labor increases risk of c-section. However, it was difficult to navigate our anecdotal experience with the study.

Well, a new retrospective cohort study published in the journal Birth: Issues in Perinatal Care found a correlation between an induction of labor and increased risk of c-section birth.

My name is Yadira Angulo Alemán. I was born in Mexico City; my father is originally from the Mixteca region of Puebla, and my mother is from the state of Veracruz.

I am grateful to Xochiquetzalli Council Inc. for the opportunity to participate in this Ancestral Knowledge Ticitl (Doula) certification. Through this course, I was able to awaken within myself—at a deep level—the knowledge that my mother, our grandmothers, and the community where I grew up practiced, and that in my youth I did not value as I do now.

What I appreciated most about this course is that it does not “sell” ancestral wisdom, but rather guides you, step by step, so that you can reconnect with the practices that have existed within our families and communities for generations.

I want to express my gratitude to all my compañeras for accompanying me throughout the Ancestral Knowledge course. But I especially want to thank Quetziquetl Angulo for taking the time to organize, structure, and bring these awakenings within us to life. Through these courses, I was able to rediscover the potential within our traditions and recognize that each of us carries medicine and healing knowledge. That we are capable of guiding and caring for our communities through touch, word, and tradition. These courses have helped cultivate new beginnings for me, both personally and professionally. I hope in the near future to bring my learning to everyone who needs it, with visibility, equity, empathy, and love.

My name is Laura, and I am very happy to have taken this Ancestral Knowledge Ticitl (Doula) course led by Quetziquetl because I learned so much—from the simplicity of care and support to sobadas, herbal rubs, and traditional closings hips. It was powerful to recognize that these practices have always been with us, passed down from grandmothers to mothers to daughters.

I am also deeply grateful for each of the women who were part of the group, as there was such a beautiful energy among us—through conversations, laughter, and shared learning.
