When I was nineteen, I lost a little red spiral notebook somewhere in Venice.

I was halfway through a ten-week Art History program in Europe, and that notebook held weeks of notes—paintings, churches, architecture, dates, sketches—everything I needed to study for my midterm.

Somehow, I had to find my way back across Venice to an obscure church we’d visited that morning. No GPS. Almost no Italian. And I hadn’t paid much attention to how we’d gotten there because, until then, I’d simply been following the group.

I found the notebook.

But 38 years later, it turns out that isn’t the part of that afternoon I remember most.

I remember children playing in the street. Laundry overhead. A cat beneath a market table. Sunlight falling across a dark church. And a tiny exhibition of Giorgio de Chirico that I wandered into completely by accident.

Sometimes the things we weren’t looking for become the things we remember.

The smooth, white sand dollars we sometimes find on the beach are actually the hard skeletons — called tests — left behind after the animal has died.

A living sand dollar looks very different. Its surface is covered in thousands of tiny, velvety spines that help it move, burrow into the sand, and guide food toward its mouth.

So if you happen to find one that’s darker in color, fuzzy-looking, or still moving, you’ve found someone who’s very much still using it. 💙

One of the loveliest things about the ocean is how much more there is to notice once we know what we’re looking at.
