When you have kids, "Firsts" are always a big thing. First bath at home. First words. First steps. First birthday.

In our case. Her second birthday is an even bigger milestone than her first.

When Scarlett was a week and a half old, her newborn screening came back positive for Cystic Fibrosis (CF). I can still remember the day we got the call. Both of our hearts sank to the deepest pits of our stomachs. I can remember standing in the sub line at Wegmans, wanting to burst out in tears. It really hit home for me because all my life I had heard about my aunt Terry and everything she had to go through with CF. Unfortunately, medicine wasn't advanced as it is now and she passed away when she was only 18. Her and Scarlett were all I could think about for weeks before we got to our first appointment in Syracuse. They instantly gave us something that we were fresh out of. Hope. Sounds corny but it's true.

They told us that things aren't as bad as they had been in the past for CFers. There were treatments and medications already available that could significantly improve Scarlett's quality of life. Even better, there were more treatments being developed that would be revolutionary for everyone that is part of the CF community. Her doctor confidently told us that she would see a cure in her lifetime. But in the meantime, there were plenty of things we could and had to do to prepare her for that. We were told that her second birthday would be pretty important. 2 is when she would be old enough to start getting on some serious, life changing medicine.

There is currently a medicine on the market called Trikafta that is so good at reversing every effect CF has on a patient's body, that it's nearly a cure. (CF is a genetic condition so the only true cure is through gene editing.) The manufacturer of Trikafta is about to complete their study for her age group and submit it to the FDA for final approval. What she holds in her hands is Orkambi. It's from the same company and is basically the next step down. Just while we wait for that FDA approval. 😁

I can't tell you how long we've been waiting for this day! 🙃

Today marks a half decade with this beautiful creature ❤️

Let me give you a little bit of our back story. I wasn't happy with the path of life I was in at the point. So I decided to attend barber school. A few weeks in, I was just in my own little corner, trying my best at learning haircutting, trying not to f**k up too bad. This chick from the Cosmology program just wouldn't leave me alone. I don't know what her deal was. But One day we passed a free hotdog truck on the way to have a Star Wars Marathon and she hasn't let since then.

Here we are. 5 years later. She's still hanging around. With a wonderful family and life together.

I love you with all my heart ❤️ Happy anniversary kid. I wouldn't want to do this journey with anyone else.

PS: Your trophy for dealing with my s**t this long will be waiting for you at home.
