The U.S. Army has selected Lockheed Martin to develop a 500-kilowatt Joint Laser Weapon System (JLWS)—the most powerful directed-energy weapon ever awarded under a military contract.

At 500 kilowatts, the system is approximately five times more powerful than Israel's 100-kilowatt Iron Beam laser. Military officials say it is being designed to destroy cruise missiles, drones, rockets, and potentially even hypersonic threats by firing concentrated energy at the speed of light.

Unlike conventional interceptors that can cost millions of dollars per missile, laser weapons can engage targets for only a few dollars' worth of electricity, dramatically reducing the cost of air defense.

If successful, the JLWS could represent one of the biggest advances in directed-energy weapons in military history.

Could laser weapons eventually replace traditional missile defense systems?

The M198 towed 155mm howitzer served as a U.S. artillery mainstay from the 1970s through the early 2000s — delivering long-range bombardment across multiple conflicts before giving way to lighter self-propelled systems.

U.S. firm Pyrrhus Aeronautics has developed LADRS, a 250-gram rifle-mounted system that allows soldiers to control drones directly through their weapon instead of using separate tablets or joysticks.
