Yoga can both energize and soothe us, depending on the type of practice we are seeking. It is a balance of physical and mental, emotional and spiritual, yin and yang.⁠⁠

If you'd like to speed up and build heat, try a power or vinyasa practice. If you'd like to slow down, let go and release, try these four poses that you can do anywhere, anytime, and that require zero props. Take five minutes to connect with your body, let your breath flow in and out, and let go. ⁠⁠

1. Adho Mukha Śvānāsana (Downdog)⁠⁠
⁠⁠
→ Slowly rock your hips from side to side, letting each leg take turns straightening and pulling the heel towards the ground. Feel your mat below each hand and foot, beneath each finger and toe. Feel the strength in your shoulders and the stretch in your hamstrings. You are here. It is now. Breathe.⁠⁠

2. Uttānāsana (Standing Forward Fold) ⁠⁠

→ Let the crown of your head fall towards the ground or shins. Eyes resting easily on your thighs, knee caps, or shins. Feel the weight of your upper body and the sturdiness of the lower. Let your face relax and allow gravity to pull you towards the earth. ⁠⁠

3. Bālāsana (Child's Pose) ⁠⁠

→ Reach your arms forward and away from you, creating length in the spine and space between each vertebra. Allow your third eye to rest on the ground, perhaps rolling it from side to side, serving as a reminder that you are here. It is now. And breathe. ⁠⁠

Within Ayurveda, there are three energetic forces of nature called doshas. The doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each has its unique strengths and vulnerabilities. Knowing our internal proportions of the three helps us understand how we can take better care of ourselves.⁠⁠

Each dosha is primarily composed of two of the five elements, has unique characteristics, functions, and imbalances, which are usually the result of an unhealthy diet, lifestyle choices, and stress. ⁠⁠

Understanding the doshas helps us develop strong self-awareness and learn how to best support our health and vitality.⁠⁠

"I am a passionate yogi + wellness blogger with a thirst for adventure and seeking the good stuff in life. After leaving my demanding corporate marketing job in 2014 to pursue teaching full time, I found a completely new outlook on life and understand the stress and sensory overload my students face daily all too well.⁠

I completed a 200-hour intensive training in Bali and bring the spirituality and beauty discovered there with me into every class I teach. I have also spent additional time expanding my practice with renowned teachers Kathryn Budig, Maty Ezraty, Margo Kellison Lightburn and Noah Maze. All of whom I consider to be inspirational in my approach to yoga.⁠

In 2015, I began dynamic anatomy study with international movement educator Dr. Eric Franklin. I am currently on the discovery path of combining Franklin Method dynamic imagery theory with yoga and am seeing mind-blowing results. I am somewhat of an anatomy 'nerd', closeted computer geek, francophile, wanderlust gypsy, and free spirit all rolled into one. I live to eat, dance to good jams, and teach people how to rock a handstand."⁠

Equality and Equity may appear to be the same. Still, they are quite different, and understanding this difference is pivotal when it comes to building an inclusive yoga practice and community. ⁠⁠⁠
⁠⁠⁠
Equality assumes that everyone has equal opportunities to learn, learns the same way, and therefore, that everyone should receive the same treatment and access to resources. While this may seem like an altruistic goal, it fails to recognize that people do not begin at the same starting line. ⁠⁠⁠
⁠⁠ ⁠⁠
Fairness in yoga is not accomplished through mechanically equal distribution of resources and opportunities. Instead, fairness is achieved when the students who inhabit studios and communities have access to the resources and the support they need to learn, grow, and thrive.⁠⁠⁠

So, why is it important to be mindful of the differences between Equity and equality in yoga?⁠⁠⁠
⁠⁠⁠
Building a yoga space and community that is mindful of these differences and strives to foster an equitable environment for their students means creating an inclusive space and ensuring all have access to yoga spaces regardless of physical, mental, financial, societal, educational, linguistic barriers. ⁠⁠⁠

Being mindful of the differences between Equity and equality in yoga means we are mindful of the different barriers to entry people experience and how we can work to mitigate these limitations.⁠⁠⁠

Leading an equitable yoga class means embodying asteya (non-stealing). Each class is about the student's personal experience, so it is our responsibility as teachers to meet students exactly where they are and doing whatever we can to support them precisely the way they want, need, and desire from a yoga class, practice, and community.⁠⁠⁠
