🍁🪶 Vermont’s history did not begin with statehood in 1791.

For thousands of years, Native peoples have lived throughout the region now known as Vermont, building communities and cultures connected to its rivers, forests, valleys, mountains and Lake Champlain. The Western Abenaki, including the Missisquoi and other Abenaki communities, have deep historical connections to the region. Vermont’s own historical findings recognize Indigenous occupation dating back thousands of years, with archaeological evidence of Abenaki communities farming Vermont’s river floodplains centuries ago.

The arrival and expansion of European and American settlement brought major changes. Disease, warfare, land pressures, treaties and changing political boundaries affected Native communities and their access to ancestral homelands. Over generations, many Indigenous families faced displacement and pressure to abandon or hide aspects of their culture.

But Native history did not end with those changes.

Today, Vermont has four tribes recognized by the State of Vermont: the Elnu Abenaki Tribe, Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk Abenaki Nation, Koasek Abenaki of the Koas, and Missisquoi, St. Francis-Sokoki Band. They continue to maintain cultural traditions, community connections, crafts, stories and other expressions of Abenaki heritage.

Native heritage can still be found across Vermont—in Lake Champlain and its surrounding valleys, place names, archaeological sites, traditional crafts, historic landscapes and stories passed from one generation to the next.

Understanding Vermont means recognizing that Indigenous peoples were here long before Vermont became a state, and that Abenaki history and culture remain an important part of Vermont today.

Vermont’s story is much older than statehood. 🍁🪶🏔️

One minute you’re cruising through peaceful Green Mountain country with nothing but forests, farms, stone walls, and a little country store ahead… next minute you’re winding through a tiny Vermont town wondering how a road this beautiful somehow became a 20-minute scenic detour. 🌲🏔️😂

You hit Burlington, Montpelier, Rutland, or Stowe and everything seems calm — smooth roads, beautiful scenery, and barely any traffic… then BOOM… a tractor appears in front of you. 🚜😭

And there’s always that one Vermont driver who refuses to rush because, “Why hurry when we can take the back road?” 😂

Covered bridges? Absolutely.

Winding mountain roads? Everywhere.

Old barns and farm stands? Of course.

Maple syrup stops? You’re definitely stopping. 🍁🥞

One-lane roads? Somehow, yes. 😅
Miss your turn? No problem. In Vermont, that just means you’ve been given another opportunity to see a mountain, a lake, a covered bridge, or a little town you didn’t know existed. 🌄✨

Then winter joins the conversation. ❄️🌨️ One minute the road is clear, the next you’re driving carefully through snow while wondering if your GPS understands Vermont roads better than you do. 😂

And wildlife? Absolutely. Deer can appear beside the road like they personally own the Green Mountain State. 🦌🌲

No rushing. No straight lines. Just winding roads, mountain views, covered bridges, farm country, maple stands, slow tractors, unpredictable weather, and plenty of reasons to pull over and enjoy the scenery. 🍁🚗

A little slower, a little quieter, and somehow exactly the way Vermont is supposed to be. 💚🏔️🍁

🐎🚗 We all say we care about the journey… but somehow we’re still late every time 😅

In Vermont, we all have one friend who refuses to take the fastest route because…

“I’m not rushing through traffic when I can take the back roads, drive through the Green Mountains, pass covered bridges and quiet farms, roll through tiny Vermont towns, stop at a country store for coffee and maple treats, get stuck behind a slow tractor on a winding two-lane road… and still arrive 30 minutes late…

but enjoy the view.” 🍁🌲✨

And honestly, with mountain views, colorful forests, old barns, covered bridges, and peaceful country roads around every corner, who’s really in a hurry? 😅

And somehow… it actually worked.

Vermont may be small, but driving across it feels like traveling through several different worlds. 🚗🍁

Northern Vermont feels like another planet: endless forests, mountain roads, quiet lakes, tiny towns, and the kind of scenery that looks like it belongs on a postcard. 🌲🏔️

Then you move through Central Vermont and suddenly it’s:
Rolling hills.

Southern Vermont? Completely different again.

Historic villages.

Farmers across Vermont are feeling the pressure as rising costs, changing weather, water concerns, and development continue creating challenges for local agriculture.

Many Vermont farmers are urging people to support local farms and buy Vermont-grown food whenever possible. At the same time, concerns are growing about farmland being lost as communities expand and open land faces increasing development pressure.

One Vermont farmer put it simply:

“People don't realize how fast farmland can disappear once it's gone. We need to protect the farmers who are still here growing food.”

Vermont may be known for its Green Mountains, maple syrup, dairy farms, and beautiful countryside, but agriculture remains an important part of the state—from the Champlain Valley to the Northeast Kingdom and farms across rural Vermont.

Now, Vermont farmers are speaking out and want their voices heard:
