And no, it’s not just one light doing all that.

Most people think red light therapy is something you sit still and wait through.

That’s one way. Not the best way.

Inflammation is the root driver behind joint pain, slow recovery, puffiness, poor circulation, and skin conditions that never fully resolve. Red and near-infrared light works at the cellular level to reduce inflammatory markers, support tissue repair, and improve circulation throughout the body. Not just on the surface. Systemically.

Here’s What the Research Shows

To begin, what is a sunburn?

A sunburn is an acute UV injury where UVB rays damage DNA in skin cells, trigger inflammation, and flood the area with oxidative stress, leading to heat, redness, tenderness, and—over time—collagen breakdown and visible aging.

In other words, too much UV exposure doesn’t just cause temporary redness; it sets off biochemical stress in the skin that can accelerate visible aging over time.

How does Red Light help?

Research in photobiomodulation (low-level light therapy) suggests red and near-infrared light may help support the skin’s natural recovery process by calming inflammation and supporting collagen and skin barrier function.

In the study “Protective Effect of Red Light‑Emitting Diode against UV‑B Radiation‑Induced Skin Damage”, researchers exposed skin to UVB radiation and then red light therapy.

Compared with UV exposure alone, the red light group showed:
• Reduced UV-induced inflammation
• Healthier density and organization of collagen and elastic fibers
• Improved markers related to skin barrier protection

Red light therapy has also been studied in burn and wound-healing models, where photobiomodulation accelerated wound closure and improved tissue repair markers at the cellular level. The underlying repair pathways overlap with those involved in recovery from UV-induced skin damage.

The emerging research points to the same core mechanisms: reducing inflammation, supporting skin structure, and promoting cellular repair. Some studies also suggest red light exposure before UV stress may help strengthen skin resilience, while post-exposure use may support recovery.

Red light is not a replacement for sunscreen or sun protection. This is an evolving area of research with growing peer-reviewed evidence.

Red Light Therapy + Exosomes + Microneedling. Here’s why forward-thinking clinics are stacking them.

Microneedling and RF procedures like Morpheus8 create controlled injury to trigger collagen remodeling. Exosomes accelerate that repair by activating fibroblasts and reversing cellular aging signals. Both are powerful. But they work in a cellular environment, and that environment matters.
