We haven’t moved in quite yet, but seeing our name on the building makes our new chapter feel very, very real.

After all the planning, dreaming, and work behind the scenes, we’re getting closer to opening the doors to our new home in Cary. And trust me, I can’t wait to show you what we’re creating.

I want to share a story with you.

I have the privilege of caring for a client whose journey has been one of unimaginable hardship, incredible resilience, and profound grace.

She has given me permission to share her story because she hopes that by telling it, someone might understand what she is still facing and perhaps be willing to come alongside her.

I have not changed her story. These are her words.

Her name is Elyssa.

My name is Elyssa and I am 32 years old. I moved here, with my two boys (4 & 9) from New Jersey where my story starts. I was born and raised in New Jersey and majority of my family are also born and raised. Unfortunately, abuse was very common, passed down generations and generations. After years of abuse and trauma I fell into the wrong crowd and became a drug addict. I had no concept or examples of emotional control or self worth so peer pressure always got to me. After 7 years using, and becoming a mother for the first time, I decided to take sobriety seriously so I could be the best mother to my autistic child. I was able to stay clean for 5.5 years, during which time I had my youngest son, who was also later diagnosed with autism.

Having two autistic children, and keeping up a household was a lot for me to handle, especially because I hadn't worked through my own trauma. I had no support system and instead of fighting, I gave up. I started looking for new ways to escape. I met up with an old friend and decided to try methadone (an opioid antagonist that reduces craving but can cause a “high”). It was too strong for me and I overdosed at home, alone with my two kids.

On April 28th, 2025, I was overdosed in my bathroom for 7 hours before anyone found me. I had only 10% of oxygen left in my body, my liver and kidneys were almost completely shut down, I suffered a mini heart attack, and I suffered from Rhabdomyolysis. I’m still battling the effects of Rhabdomyolysis today. My body was in the same position the entire time, so my muscles froze in place. My left leg down to my toes were paralyzed when I woke up. It was by the Grace of God, and Him only, that I am awake. Every Doctor who reads my chart is amazed that I’m here, and suffered no lasting organ damage.

I did, however, suffer so many other consequences of my actions. I lost everything and had to completely start over but most important to me, I lost custody of my children for 4 months . I did have visits, while I did everything asked of me to prove my children are safe with me. Being able to hug my children is a privilege that I will never take for granted again. I stayed sober and being so close to death has shown me what I really want to live for.

It took over a year and a half of chiropractor visits to get the small amount of feeling back that I have now. Traditional doctors haven’t been able to help because the issue is muscular. My only hope is to continue Chiropractic visits, which I have to pay out of pocket, and massage therapy to increase blood flow to my muscles. I've been unable to walk without a medical boot since this happened, and unable to work. I’m relying on SSI payments to survive. My main focus is getting back on my feet so that I can have my life back, and be the mother I've worked hard to be. I want to give my children the lives they deserve.

This is where I’m hoping someone might step in.

Elyssa needs ongoing massage therapy as part of managing the physical effects of what her body has been through. Unfortunately, because she is unable to work and is relying on SSI, she simply cannot afford to come in for the consistent monthly care that would benefit her.

I am looking for one person, family, or local business who would be willing to sponsor Elyssa’s monthly treatments.

This isn't about rescuing her. She is already doing the hard work. She is staying sober. She is rebuilding. She is fighting to regain her mobility and create a better life for her children.

The opportunity is simply to remove one obstacle.

A monthly sponsorship would mean that Elyssa could continue receiving the care she needs without having to choose between massage therapy and the other necessities of life.

Sometimes making a difference in someone's life doesn't require doing something enormous.

Sometimes it means quietly coming alongside someone who is already fighting as hard as she can and saying, “I've got this part.”
