I wish someone had let me know in college that skinny does not equal beautiful.
Skinny can be beautiful, but skinny does not beautiful make.
I just had the privilege of mentoring a young college woman with some future career advice and before she got off the call she was so kind in thanking me for using my platform to show that strong and full-bodied women are also beautiful. She found me on Instagram and the message of focusing on your body’s abilities over aesthetics hit a note for her. I then realized that it took me over a decade from where this young woman is to realize this message.
Skinny was what I wanted to be so, so badly in my early 20’s. My genetics had other plans. I am 5’4”, 134-139lbs, and I’m a size 4. When I was 142-154lbs, a size 8, I was miserably chasing after skinny. This constant feeling of failure kept me from realizing my potential.
I was already beautifully shaped as a functional athlete. When I realized that I could just double down on how I was naturally built and move the way I was gifted to move…that’s when it all came together. And I don’t mean weight-loss or muscle gain, I mean, I finally felt good in my own skin, even at my higher weight. The weight-loss and size drop was because I grew confident and consistent in my movement and routine.
My advice: stop chasing an aesthetic that doesn’t compliment your build or natural movement, instead use your athletic abilities to your advantage.
Change in mindset creates new motivation, which creates consistency, which creates changes in performance, which creates changes in your body. (And this advice is only for those that are after a physical change and are constantly frustrated. Otherwise, keep doing what you’re doing😘).

Just happy…that’s what I want to be.
I’ve achieved a balance and roll-off-my-back mentality that allows me to find peace or return to peace through chaos.
I know not everyone functions or processes things like I do, but one of the things that helps me find peace is setting realistic expectations.
I don’t set my bar low, I set it so that I surprise myself if I hit it and I’m still satisfied when I fall short. But the trick is that I’m ACTUALLY able to hit it. My motivation stays strong when I know it’s obtainable and within reach.
Some shoot for the stars and are happy hitting the moon. I shoot for the moon and get excited when I touch the clouds.

Instead of thinking “should I,” or “have I earned it,” change the narrative to “how would I feel if I,” or “is this what my body is asking for?”
I love to have dark chocolate or a glass of wine at night some times. Sometimes I want ice cream. Three days ago, I felt hungry most of the day. So, I kept eating nutrition-positive foods, obviously my body needed to replenish for some reason! Instead of restricting because it wasn’t how I “should feel,” I listened to what it was asking for.
What do I do when I’m getting a hunger signal? I eat. What if it’s a craving or sweet-tooth attack? I eat what my body is asking for.
It has taken me years and years to finally get to where food doesn’t have a morality attached to it. It’s either fueling my body positively and/or it’s fueling my soul.
I chose to answer the call quickly, but respectfully eating just enough to feel satiated without feeling restricted or over-eating. I end up feeling like I’ve rewarded myself for the great communication I’ve developed with zero shame attached.
Again…this has taken me years to figure out because it is such a mental, physical, social, and emotional balance. But it can be done.
First step: stop labeling foods as “good” and “bad.” Instead, understand that foods can be medicine or they can be pleasure (for me, now it’s often both!). The dopamine spike I used to seek with a pleasure food is now found in delicious and nutrition-positive foods because I have an understanding of what’s taking place in my metabolic systems! It’s much cooler than just looking great in a bikini, trust me!

This just in: My butt looks incredible upside down 😳🍑
I’m now going to completely stop doing squats and just walk on my hands for the rest of my days.
👉🏼That would be silly, right? This is an example of how extreme our nutrition choices can be. On one hand, you want quick aesthetic results, but on the other hand, are you neglecting internal (non-aesthetic) systems?
🫱🏽You’ll lose weight by dramatically slashing calories, 🫲🏽but you could destroy your relationship with food.
🫱🏽You’ll probably lose weight quickly by eliminating certain food groups, 🫲🏽but are you destroying your metabolism and gut health each time you do these restrictive diets? Thereby, making you gain even more weight when you’re done with the diet? (There is research to support this effect.)
🫱🏽You can do a juice cleanse, 🫲🏽but your training will probably suffer. Also, do you know exactly why you’re cleansing? (Most people don’t, they just want the easy restriction guidance).
🫱🏽If you go vegan, are you doing it with a full understanding of fueling intelligently? 🫲🏽There are junk food vegans, and this version can be detrimental to health systems.
🫱🏽Going keto can show some quick visible results, 🫲🏽but what’s going on in your gut? Make sure you understand how each system is being impacted when eliminating large groups of plant sources.
Just food for thought! The best strategy is to the take information and 🤲🏽 apply it in small doses after gaining an understanding of long term effects. Try to avoid huge shifts based on marketing or what your friend, dad, or sorority sister did. Everyone is different, and just because someone gets visible, aesthetic results, they may not know what damage may be occurring internally.

Do yourself a favor: surround yourself with positive women and cut out the joy-sucking incubus.
I can joyfully think of each of my girlfriends in my corner and reflect on the gifts they provide to me. Some are super complimentary and great cheerleaders, some are grace-filled critics, some are there to just listen, some are there to help me solve problems, and the list goes on. Our relationships are so unique and necessary to my personal development.
Surround yourself with a handful of baddies!
Also, it’s important to be okay with walking away from a relationship that isn’t providing joy. I’ve had to disengage with women that only took from me. I won’t blame the woman, but the relationship dynamic was constantly dimming my light. So, we agreed to not force a friendship that wasn’t mutually beneficial.
Protect yourself, protect your heart, but be open to finding love in other women. They can understand and relate to your struggles more than anyone else.

My initial plan was to take a serious photo, and then my dog farted. 🐕💨
Alternate plan: I realized I liked these photos better than any serious pic.
Hi, I’m Jenny. 🙋♀️
I am the unofficial Queen of the plan B.
When things don’t go my way, when I had my heart set on one outcome or one opportunity, and that thing doesn’t come to fruition, I’m like Muhammad Ali in a corner. I think clearly about my next steps, I only see what opportunities are now available, and I make my move.
Anyone that subscribes as a training client on my Get Salty app or website is very aware that 💩 doesn’t always go my way. Queen of the plan B, yes, me. Dark Cloud of the tech world, also me. Even when things are going horribly wrong during a live session with my technology, my hamster wheel is working over time to evaluate the options available to me. And my athletes will attest that I’m usually laughing and joking about it the entire way through. 🍋 meet lemonade.
The key is to be okay with being just okay. I’m not a perfectionist, so I’m sorry if you cannot relate to this message, but I find that setting my expectations appropriately has been in my greatest interest.
Don’t set the bar low, set it appropriately.

Get ready to be sick’a me! It is summer and I have lots of bathing suits that needs to get worn!
Suns out buns out!
Let there be hot moms in bikinis!
Where there is sunscreen, there shall be cheeky bottoms!
Tummies, thighs, stretch marks, and scars…bring ‘em out, bring ‘em out!
Thicc, thin, muscular, enhanced, curvay, just plain tired…Imma need you by the pool in your favorite suit!
But Jenny, I’m out of shape! But Jenny, I need to lose weight first! But Jen, I haven’t been working out! But Jenny, I gained weight this year!
I get it, and it’s not the best to not feel like you in your own body. So, go find a suit that fits your body type the way you want it to. Know that your family wants your presence more than you want a “perfect bod.” (Hint: there’s no such thing). And finally, confidence radiates at any size or shape. So start speaking to yourself and about yourself kindly.

I DO NOT count macros. At all.
Before we jump to conclusions, this is not an anti-macros post. This is my personal story of how I now do not need to count macros or calories. Take it or leave it, but I’m living my best, most peaceful life. I think it’s important to share.
I am where I am today (intuitively eating) by trying and learning:
➡️I went on restrictive diets that taught me I get resentful when restricted. 2003
➡️I counted macros with the help of tracker apps, this taught me food values. 2006
➡️I tried scheduling my 5 small meals that somebody told me was beneficial for my insulin levels, I learned that I do better on 3 meals a day. 2007
➡️I meal prepped and ate the same boring foods each day, this taught me I need diversity. 2008
➡️I watched my portion sizes, this taught me that I could feel satiated on small, but filling plates. 2014
➡️I started eating mostly plants, this helped me develop a stronger gut microbiome and more efficient metabolism. 2017
➡️I counted calories, this taught me what my maintenance caloric intake should be. 2018
➡️I started listening to my body and fueled it when it was hungry, and put the fork down when I started feeling full…I learned how to fuel intuitively. 2021
We all learn best by doing not just being told what to do. You’ve got to work through some trials to understand your fueling personality. You’ve got to listen to your body’s cues.
It is a process. It takes time.
Give yourself time, but learn something along the journey.

It feels so good to love the skin I’m in. Why am I gloating about how happy I am with my body? It doesn’t seem fair while so many out there that are constantly battling with their self-image and self-esteem, daily.
This is why I’m sharing: I want to give you some motivation to stay after your goals. I have finally gotten to truly love my body. I’ve enjoyed being me and no one else for the past 4 years, but it has taken awareness, purpose, and consistency. It wasn’t by accident or just good genetics for me.
Creating a wellness goal and creating a lifestyle change are two distant things, typically. I want to remind you that it doesn’t happen overnight, it may not even happen in the same year. But making more health-positive decisions than you did yesterday will keep you moving forward.
You don’t have to make weight loss, body fat loss, body change, clothing size the goal to achieve happiness. (Hell, I could be much leaner, myself, if a perfect body was the key to happiness!) Instead, focusing on filling your days with better fuel, movement, sleep, affirmations, mental clarity, etc, will breed appreciation and positive self-thoughts, at least in my experience.
THINGS TO FOCUS ON:
Fuel properly: try to incorporate more whole foods in appropriate amounts. Drink tons of water and limit alcohol.
Move consistently: move in a way that motivates you, walk often, take the stairs, stretch, etc.
Sleep more: 8 hours+
Affirmations: alter the way you describe or think of yourself. Accept compliments from others, it is truly a beneficial practice!
Mental Clarity: stop and breathe, meditate, pray, seek therapy.
