For us, lemon and orange go together real bad. Here is why:

Citric acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that dissolves the bonds between dead skin cells on the surface. This removes dull buildup, refines texture, and reveals brighter, clearer skin underneath. It also acts as an antioxidant, protecting the skin from environmental stressors that contribute to uneven tone.

We used two citric acid sources in this formula: lemon extract and sweet orange extract.

Lemon extract delivers high-potency citric acid that removes dull surface buildup quickly. Sweet orange extract provides citric acid alongside natural compounds that soften and support the skin barrier during exfoliation.

Combining these extracts allows us to standardize our citric acid levels. What does this mean? We can ensure the citric acid amounts are consistent with every use.

And this is not even everything this scrub has in store. Stay tuned.

Being intentional with yourself is not selfish. You schedule time for work meetings. You respond to texts. You show up when people need you. Somewhere in all of that, your own care becomes the thing you get to if there is time left over. The optional add-on. That logic treats your body like it ranks below every other demand on your time. News flash: It does not.

The same energy you give to showing up for others belongs to you by default.

We call this Insurgent Self-Inclusion. It is the active refusal to sideline yourself in how you move through your body and your life. You do not disappear to make room for everyone else. You include yourself. Because self-care is not a side quest. It’s not something you squeeze in on the weekends before a busy week. It’s now.

Within the last few years, kojic acid has had its ups and downs in the media. We have all seen the skin damage it can cause when formulated with poorly or when a kojic acid product is used incorrectly. While we understand the hesitation around this ingredient, we want to take the time to educate you on how it works and what makes our product different.

💡 The Basics of Kojic Acid
Derived from fungi during fermentation, kojic acid is a potent brightening ingredient. It works by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for making melanin. This makes it highly effective for targeting uneven skin tone, dark spots, and hyperpigmentation from past breakouts or friction.

⚠️ The Common Limitation
Standard kojic acid is water-soluble and highly unstable. It oxidizes when exposed to air and light, losing its potency and turning brown. At higher or unregulated concentrations, it is also known for causing skin sensitivity and reactions.

✨ Meet Kojic Acid Dipalmitate (KAD)
To address these limitations, we used KAD: the oil-soluble derivative. KAD remains stable throughout the product’s shelf life, penetrates deeper into the skin layers where melanin production happens, and integrates smoothly without separation.

🧪 Why This Matters For Our Scrub
This scrub is anhydrous, meaning there is zero water in the formula. The base is oil-rich and emulsifies only when you mix it with water in the shower.

Standard kojic acid would not integrate into this oil system safely or smoothly. It would become unstable, deliver inconsistent results, and could compromise your skin barrier.

KAD, however, stays fully active. It works while you scrub and continues working even after the formula rinses off. Your skin gets a brightening active that works through the entire process, not one that quits halfway through.

For this formula, KAD was the right call.

Let’s be honest, scented body care is running the world. From scrubs to creams and everything in between. But our truth is that our first scrub needed to be unscented. Here is why:

It was a deliberate choice. When you have both botanical extracts and actives working together to brighten and exfoliate, fragrance does not add anything useful. It does not help the actives work better. It does not improve results. And while it is always nice to have a scent fill the bathroom, it actually takes up space in the formula and increases the chance of irritation when your skin is more receptive to everything touching it.

For this scrub, unscented made sense. Your skin gets the full effort of everything in it without anything competing for attention. Fragrance would be extra, and extra does not always mean better. It would essentially just be decoration. And in this particular moment, the goal is for your skin to get something more intentional than that. 💫

The REAL key to brightening skin comes down to blocking melanin production and stopping oxidative stress, ESPECIALLY as it relates to darkening caused by high-friction areas or acne. So let’s get into why we added both turmeric and saffron to address this.

Those dark spots form when your skin overproduces melanin, driven by an enzyme called tyrosinase. The good news is, the curcumin in turmeric is a tyrosinase inhibitor. It stops pigment production before it reaches the surface. Curcumin also has anti-inflammatory properties that address the molecules responsible for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Those are the dark spots that appear after acne heals.

Saffron on the other hand contains an antioxidant called crocin, which brightens but also absorbs environmental stressors like UV exposure and pollution that dull the skin. Saffron also contains crocetin, another antioxidant that supports cell turnover and helps renew the surface layer of skin. Lastly, the safranal in saffron is another powerhouse antioxidant that works to calm redness, especially during exfoliation.

TL;DR To sum it up, both cosmetic-grade extracts work to address dullness from two different angles: blocking production at the source and defending against external damage.

In our body scrub, your skin gets both. Not one or the other. But wait, there’s more! Stay tuned to find out what else this scrub has in store 🫣
