Frustrated with foot pain? Hobbling around to compensate for the pain? Foot pain can be so debilitating and can stop you from living your life to the full!
But many foot issues actually stem from your calves and hamstrings which are swaddled in a huge matrix of fascia pulling in your body. Everything in the body is surrounded by fascia. It supports your muscles, bones, nerves and organs.
While fascia is the stability system of your body, it shortens and stiffens as you age. The tightening and stiffening of the fascia restricts mobility and puts tension on the surrounding muscles and ligaments. This then causes muscle strains and poor muscle control.
With foot issues, we begin to get atrophy in the arch of our foot. The use of an arch support to fill the space under the arch can cause more atrophy, more instability and pain.
Stretching fascia is a very effective and safe technique for foot pain as it targets tight fascia with a combination of compression and stretch.

Do you always have tight hamstrings even though you stretch them everyday?
Try this fascial stretch:
🔸 Sit with your back against a wall or something upright
🔸 Place two small balls underneath your hamstrings
🔸 point and flex your ankle/foot 8x
🔸 do the same movement with your leg turned out and then turned in
🔸 Add more weight by leaning forward
This compression + movement is what gives you a deeper stretch and lasting results. This is because you stretch both the elastin and collagen component of your connective tissue. A traditional stretch only targets the elastin and like a rubber band the tissue recoils back to whatever length it had been and just gives temporary result.
Stretching your fascia is key to keeping those hamstrings lengthened and prevent back and hip pain that can result from tight hamstrings.

Rossiter Stretching addresses your fascia which is a system of densely packed fibrous connective tissue. It provides an intertwining “netting” that encompasses everything inside of you, providing a framework of protection and support. It encases the circulatory, nervous, muscular skeletal and lymphatic system.
Picture the white thick layer found underneath an orange peel as the fascia below your skin. The rind encases the orange and divides it into segments, just as your fascia encases your whole body and segments around your bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and organs. It acts as a barrier between your deeper soft tissue and the surrounding skin.
Fascia can get injured from trauma, overuse, repetitive movement and poor posture. It will tighten which will cause a decrease in mobility and places tension on the surrounding muscles and ligaments, and leads to muscle strains and poor muscle control.

Are you wanting to start Pilates but not sure of what path to take?
Mat and equipment Pilates are the two most common types of Pilates classes. Mat Pilates is done on a mat on the floor without any special equipment.
The Pilates equipment with a combination of springs set at different tensions and a student's own body weight, create resistance during the exercises. The resistance also adds a weight bearing component beyond what the mat exercises offer. This is especially important if you have Osteopenia or Osteoporosis.
While it is possible to learn Pilates from online instruction, videos and books, I would recommend starting out in a private session with a certified Pilates instructor. This will ensure a good foundation of the basic movement principles of Pilates and allow the instructor to tailor modifications to your needs.

By just focusing on stretching our muscles, we are missing out on the importance of stretching our fascia. Just like muscles, fascia can also get injured from trauma, overuse, repetitive movement and poor posture. Fascia or connective tissue is made up of collagen and elastin. Traditional stretching only addresses the elastin. With age, restrictions and limitations, the collagen component solidifies and glues the tissues together. Because traditional stretching only addresses the elastin, like a rubber band the tissue will recoil back to whatever length it had been giving a temporary result. But fascial stretching allows you to lengthen and elongate the collagenous component of the tissue in addition to the elastin. This makes the stretches more effective, and the results will last longer.
