This sweet client came in for her very first curly haircut after realizing her hair just wasn’t working for her anymore. Her curls had become overgrown, uneven, and lacked the shape she loved when her hair was shorter.

One of the biggest things we focused on today was education. She was using several products and ingredients that were actually working against her curls, creating extra frizz and making styling more difficult. Once we talked through what to use (and what to avoid), everything started to make sense!

Gray Blending to add Depth

One of the biggest misconceptions about gray blending is that it has to be done with root color or blonde highlights. Sometimes, the most natural and flattering result comes from adding dimension with lowlights instead.

My guest was feeling washed out and felt like her hair had become a little flat and boring. Rather than covering up all of her beautiful silver, we enhanced it by weaving in soft dimensional lowlights.

This technique:

SUMMER, BEACH DAYS & HAIR EXTENSIONS

One of the most common questions I get this time of year is:

“Can I swim with my hair extensions?”

My answer is that I do not recommend swimming in chlorinated pools with extensions if you can avoid it. Unlike your natural hair, extension hair is no longer receiving nutrients and natural oils from your scalp, making it much more vulnerable to damage.

Chlorine can cause:

✨ Dryness and brittleness
✨ Tangling and matting
✨ Shortened lifespan of the hair
✨ Unwanted color changes or discoloration

The biggest concern is that once extension hair changes color from chlorine exposure, there are only so many corrective options available.

Now, beach trips and saltwater are a little different. Saltwater typically won’t turn extension hair green like chlorine can, but it can still be very drying. The drier the hair becomes, the more brittle it gets, which can lead to breakage and shorten the life of your extensions.

If you plan on swimming in the ocean, here are a few things I recommend:

✔️ Saturate your hair with clean water before swimming. Hair acts like a sponge, so if it’s already full of fresh water, it won’t absorb as much saltwater.

✔️ Apply a leave-in conditioner or lightweight hair oil before getting in the water to help create a protective barrier.

✔️ Braid your hair to help prevent tangling and matting while swimming.

✔️ Rinse your hair with fresh water immediately after swimming.

✔️ Shampoo as soon as possible after your beach day. I recommend a good double wash, or occasionally a very light clarifying shampoo if needed to remove buildup.

✔️ Follow up with a deep conditioning treatment. Clarifying and saltwater can both be drying, so restoring moisture afterward is extremely important.

Even if you do everything right, frequent swimming can still impact the longevity of your extensions. That’s why I always remind my clients that extensions are an investment.

If you know you’ll be spending most of your summer in chlorinated pools, it may be worth taking a break from extensions and having them reinstalled later. Protecting the hair now can save you from replacing it sooner than expected.

☀️ SUMMER HAIR WARNING FOR BLONDES & HIGHLIGHTED HAIR ☀️

Swimming season is here, and while pool days and beach trips are some of the best summer memories, they can be rough on blonde hair…especially for kids, teens, and anyone with highlights, balayage, or lightened hair.

💚 Why does blonde hair turn green?
It’s actually not the chlorine itself! The biggest culprit is metals like copper in pool water. Lightened hair is more porous, making it easier for those minerals to attach to the hair and leave behind a green tint.

🌊 Salt water can be just as damaging.
While it won’t usually turn hair green, salt water can pull moisture from the hair, leaving it feeling dry, tangled, brittle, and faded.

(Do not get in a pool after a fresh set of highlights that is a big no-no you have more chance for it to turn green as the hair is more porous!)

✨ How to PREVENT damage:

✔️ Wet hair with clean water BEFORE swimming
Hair acts like a sponge. If it’s already full of fresh water, it absorbs less pool or ocean water.

✔️ Apply a leave-in conditioner or lightweight hair oil before swimming
This helps create a protective barrier and adds moisture.

✔️ Braid long hair
Braids help reduce tangling and breakage while swimming.

✔️ Rinse & wash immediately after swimming
The sooner you rinse out chlorine, minerals, and salt, the better.

✔️ Use a swimmer’s shampoo or clarifying shampoo occasionally
This helps remove buildup from chlorine, minerals, sunscreen, and hard water.

(Even when doing these steps you still have a possibility that your may hair will turn green/be dry and brittle)
