It is a good idea to confirm that you are buying natural latex. Also, in most cases, shredded latex (and shredded memory foam) used to fill pillows is recycled from the manufacturing process for mattresses.

[07/23/14]   In a survey done on 1,000 Britons, 57 percent of the people who sleep naked reported feeling "happy" in love.

While less than half of the people who wear pyjamas or nighties said they were "extremely happy".

[07/17/14]   I love my relationship with my bed. No commitment. We just sleep together every night! = )

[07/16/14]   A big reason why many people are now considering natural / organic bedding are - PBDEs - the chemicals used as flame retardants in polyurthane foam mattresses.

PBDEs - the acronym for polybrominated diphenyl ethers, chemicals that have been used for years as flame retardants in bedding and are now thought to be toxic to people and the environment.

PBDEs have been found to interfere with thyroid function and lead to deficits in children's fine motor function, attention and IQ.

The Environmental Protection Agency says on its website. "Various PBDEs have also been studied for ecotoxicity in mammals, birds, fish, and invertebrates. In some cases, current levels of exposure for wildlife may be at or near adverse effect levels."

A positive is, PBDE flame retardants are no longer widely used in the manufacture of mattresses. Two of the chemicals were voluntarily phased out nearly a decade ago, and a third PBDE was discontinued last year.

Still, the presence of trace amounts of PBDEs in humans may be increasing, according to the EPA.

Sleep well: how to get more than 40 winks - Independent.ie

"Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder seen by physicians," says Breege Leddy, of The Insomnia Clinic at Bon Secours Hospital Dublin..."It affects up to 15percent of the population on a chronic basis (lasting months) and presents itself in different ways with people either finding it hard to get off to sleep, stay or maintain sleep, having early morning awakenings or getting restless sleep."

Duration is what defines insomnia, with sufferers dealing with a lack of sleep several nights a week for more than six months. You only have to look at the booming sleep aids industry to see what a widespread issue it is. Forget your electronic devices at night to sleep better.

Avoid any electronics at least one hour before you go to bed. Emitted electronic light at night can cause a sleep problem. Blue light is similar to the spectrum of day light, much like going into the sun which blocks melatonin, the sleep hormone that’s secreted when you’re in the dark.

[07/09/14]   Lower your body temperature to sleep better.

Being too hot at night adversely effects your sleep. Research shows that 65 degrees is the best temperature for a good night’s rest.

[07/08/14]   Cut out any caffeine after 2 p.m. to sleep better in the evening.

Late afternoon is usually when your body takes an energy dip. While a caffeine buzz will pick you up, its effect could last long after you leave work.

“Six hours after your last sip of caffeine, it’s still in your body so it’s crucial to keep your daily intake at under 300 mg—like three small cups—and to avoid it anytime after 2 p.m.,” says sleep expert James B. Maas, Ph.D., author of Sleep for Success!

[07/08/14]   To Sleep Better set a 7-days-a-week schedule.

“Regularity is vital—go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time naturally, including weekends,” says Equinox advisory board member and sleep expert James B. Maas, Ph.D., author of Sleep for Success!

“You have one biological clock, not one for the work week and one for the weekend...otherwise a yo-yo schedule will give you symptoms similar to those of jet lag—daytime drowsiness, slow reaction time, impaired cognition, moodiness, lack of energy.”

[07/06/14]   Obese adults who lose at least 5 percent of their body weight report that they sleep better and longer after six months of weight loss, according to a new study.

The results were presented at the joint meeting of the International Society of Endocrinology and The Endocrine Society: ICE/ENDO 2014 in Chicago.

Sage, an anti-inflammatory also works as a natural sleep aid.

Just steep 4 tablespoons in a cup of hot water, steep for four hours, strain, and reheat to drink.

Try Lemon Balm for better sleep

This lemon-scented member of the mint family has been a sleep-inducing superstar for ages. Other benefits include better digestion and decreased agitation.

Lemon balm tea: Steep 1 to 2 teaspoons of the dried herb in 1 cup of hot water for 5 to 10 minutes.

You can get sleep inducer tryptophan eating a cup of whole grain cereal with organic milk before bedtime.

Eating fish can help you sleep better..

Certain fish and sea creatures contain sleep-inducing tryptophan, including shrimp, cod, tuna, and halibut.

Since some fish are high in contaminants try to stick to catches like Pacific cod from Alaska or pole-caught Albacore tuna from the U.S. or British Columbia.

Try Cherries to sleep better..

In a small study, participants drank eight ounces of the tart cherry (also known as sour cherry) juice in the morning, and another eight ounces in the evening, for two weeks and reported better sleeping habits.

Since all cherries are naturally high in melatonin, a compound that makes us sleepy, you can try eating a cup as a snack before it’s time for shut-eye if you’d rather not drink the juice.

[06/30/14]   Sleep is one of the most underutilized strategies for enhancing athletic performance.

[06/27/14]   How do you choose a Natural / Organic pillow?

Cotton is a static fiber and will provide a firmer, flatter pillow.
Wool is springier, resilient and has the best moisture - wicking properties.
Kapok is the most down like.

And remember as a general guideline:

Side sleepers need extra fill pillow
Back sleepers need a medium fill pillow
Stomach sleepers need light fill pillows.

Polaroids!

Make your bed Allergen-Free

Dust mites are a major cause of allergies found in bedding and on pillows. At least once a week you should wash your pillowcases, sheets, and blankets in very hot water and dried in a hot dryer to kill dust mites. You should also cover mattresses, non-washable pillows, comforters and other bedding in non-toxic allergen-proof covers.

[06/24/14]   Why you need your beauty sleep

Sleep decreases stress hormones, such as cortisol. Insufficient sleep causes cortisol levels to rise, cortisol inhibits the formation of collagen, a protein often referred to as the “glue that holds the body together.” That’s why sleep deprivation actually accelerates aging.
