Shawna Rust is a personal trainer and a Healthy Private Chef that provides people with the tools that they need to live a happy healthy life. She believes that what you put into your body is what you get out of it. She has over nine years experience in cooking and has trained many people with variations of personal physical goals. Her professional experience has been in corporate gyms, YMCA, and private training in facilities. Prior to being a Private Chef and Personal Trainer she cooked in multiple professional kitchens in Las Vegas and Australia which lead her into the healthy side of food. She loves to cook for children with weight issue’s and makes the experience as fun as possible. Enjoy the beautiful summer weather with a walk or hike outside. There are many ways to get in a workout and sometimes it can be as simple as getting outside and enjoying a good dose of vitamin D while moving your feet. [07/23/13]   Healthy recipe of the week: Spicy garbanzo beans

Great for a salty and spicy snack! Don't forget- spice can boost the metabolism!

One can of garbanzo beans
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 teaspoon of crushes red pepper

Super simple! Preheat your oven to 400 degress. Rinse your garbanzo beans and then coat them with the ingredients. Use an oven safe dish safe and pop them in the oven for 40 to 45 minutes! Share with friends and enjoy!

Roasted Corn with Basil-Shallot Vinaigrette

Recipe of the week- Roasted Corn with Basil- Shallot Vinaigrette

Try this great summer time recipe! Make sure to use organic corn since most corn is Genetically Modified. This recipe is great for a BBQ. Enjoy this twist on traditional corn!


3 cups fresh organic corn kernels
tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
1 tablespoon minced shallot
1 tablespoon red-wine vinegar
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
Freshly ground pepper, to taste


Preheat oven to 450°F. Toss corn and oil to coat and spread out on a large baking sheet. Bake, stirring once, until some kernels begin to brown, about 20 minutes. Combine basil, shallot, vinegar, salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Add the corn; toss to coat. Serve warm or cold.

5 Minutes to Tighter Buns and Thighs

Exercise of the week

"No time to work out?"- try this quick exercise that you can get done in minutes in a time crunch. Check out the link below from for a visual and additional 5 minute exercises to tone up the buns and thighs with an exercise blast!

Clam Toe Taps:

Reps: As many as possible for 30 seconds on each leg

Lie on right side, propping torso up with right elbow directly below shoulder, left hand on hip. Hips should be stacked with knees bent about 90 degrees, toes pointed. Keeping knees pressed together, internally rotate left leg, lifting left heel towards ceiling.

Press away from the floor with right forearm and lift right hip as left knee turns up to ceiling, pressing the inside edges of feet together. Lower hip as left leg rotates back in. Do as many reps as possible with good form for 30 seconds, and then repeat on opposite side.

Let's get fit! Build a bottom half that turns heads on the beach this summer—no gym needed.

Sauteed Kale

Healthy Recipe of the week!- Sauteed Kale

So many of us today are either battling or know someone struggling with Diabetes. Our diets are filled with high sugar items these days- it seems hard to avoid. Sub out the high sugar/high carbohydrate sides this week and add some healthy greens to your meal. Little changes, one day at a time, will make a difference in your health! Enjoy and share with friends!


1 1/2 pounds Organic Kale, stems & leaves coarsely chopped
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 cloves garlic, finely sliced
1/2 cup organic vegetable stock or water
Sea Salt and pepper
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar


Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and cook until soft, but not colored. Raise heat to high, add the stock and kale and toss to combine. Cover and cook for 5 minutes. Remove cover and continue to cook, stirring until all the liquid has evaporated. Season with sea salt and pepper to taste and add vinegar.

Grilled Salmon with Sherry Vinegar-Honey Glaze and Spicy Tomato Relish

Recipe of the week: Sweet and Spicy Salmon

Salmon is a healthy and delicious choice. It has so many powerful benefits from healthy skin and hair to lowering yor risk to certain types of cancer. Try this great dish for yummy eats and a healthy boost!


1 cup sherry vinegar
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/4 cup honey (Raw Honey)
1 tablespoon ancho chile powder
Sea Salt and freshly ground pepper
4 salmon fillets, 6 ounces each (Wild Caught)


In a small saucepan over high heat, reduce the vinegar to 1/4 cup. In a mixing bowl, combine the vinegar syrup with the mustard, honey, and ancho chile powder and season to taste with salt and pepper. Let rest 30 minutes.

Preheat grill. Brush the salmon with the glaze and grill 3 minutes on each side for medium. Serve with the spicy tomato relish.

Spicy Tomato Relish:

2 medium ripe tomatoes, chopped
2 tablespoons finely diced Spanish onion
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1/4 cup olive oil
Sea Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

For the Spicy Tomato Relish: Combine all ingredients in a bowl and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve at room temperature.

[06/11/13]   Exercise of the week- Optimize up your warm up!

Create results faster by changing it up!

Step 1- Start in a plank position- come to a push up position with your elbows and forearms on the ground. Your shoulders should be stacked over your elbows. Create a long spine from head to toe. Engage your quadriceps as well as your core and push into your forearms to broaden your collar bone. Hold forearms plank for 30 seconds.

Step 2- Press up to a push up position/high plank (maintain plank but press up onto your hands- shoulders stacked over wrists). Bring your right knee into your chest and then your left knee into your chest- engage your core and press into your hands away from the floor. Alternate legs and complete 20 knee lifts.

Step 3- Back to forearm plank and repeat- complete three sets and in no time your are warm and ready to go! Enjoy your workout!

Braised Balsamic Chicken

Healthy Recipe of the week: Braised Balsamic Chicken


6 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves (free range organic)
ground black pepper to taste
1 teaspoon garlic salt
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, thinly sliced
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried rosemary
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme


1. Season chicken breasts with ground black pepper and garlic salt. Heat olive oil in a medium skillet, and brown the onion and seasoned chicken breasts.
2. Pour tomatoes and balsamic vinegar over chicken, and season with basil, oregano, rosemary and thyme. Simmer until chicken is no longer pink and the juices run clear, about 15 minutes.

Quinoa and Black Beans

Recipe of the week- Delicious Quinoa and Black Beans


1 teaspoon olive oil
1 onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped
3/4 cup uncooked quinoa
1 1/2 cups vegetable broth
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
salt and pepper to taste
1 cup frozen corn kernels (organic if possible)
2 (15 ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro


1. Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the onion and garlic, and saute until lightly browned.
2. Mix quinoa into the saucepan and cover with vegetable broth. Season with cumin, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 20 minutes,
3. Stir frozen corn into the saucepan, and continue to simmer about 5 minutes until heated through. Mix in the black beans and cilantro.
4. Share and Enjoy!!!!!!!!!

The Single Dumbbell Workout

Exercise of the week!

Tone up the arms and work your core all at once! All you need is one dumbbell.

Start with your feet hip width apart and hold the dumbbell in both hands (one hand on each end). Release the tailbone down towards the ground and engage your core. Lift the dumbbell up to chest height; maintain straight arms as you extend them forward. Twist towards the left and keep your hips facing forward and arms straight. Return to center and then twist to the left again. Do 8 reps on each side.

Vertical Abs Workout: 6 Standing Moves for a Six-Pack

Exercise of the week!

Standing Bicycle- Do you want that flat tummy for summer? Let's get to work!

Start by standing with your feet together and your knees slightly bent. Place your hands behind your head. Lift your left heel off of the ground. Engage your core (abs) and lift your left knee up high while bringing your right shoulder as close to your knee as possible. Then lower down slowly with control. Do 20 reps on each side.

Maca balls- A superfood treat. Great for a little pick me up!!

2T. Maca powder
2T. Cacao powder
Dash cinnamon
Dash cayenne
Dash salt
1/2 cup Nut Butter

1. Mix all ingredients together and then shape into balls
2. Chill for about 30mins
3. Dust with cacao powder
