Who is Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark?
Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark (1917–1983) was a pioneering American psychologist whose research transformed the understanding of race and child development. She earned her Ph.D. in psychology from Columbia University in 1943, becoming one of the first African American women to do so.
Alongside her husband, Kenneth B. Clark, she conducted the groundbreaking “doll experiments,” which examined how segregation affected Black children’s self-esteem and racial identity. Their findings showed that many Black children internalized negative beliefs about themselves due to systemic racism. This research was cited in the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education (1954), which ruled racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional.
In 1946, Clark co-founded the Northside Center for Child Development in Harlem, providing psychological services to underserved children and families. Her work helped lay the foundation for culturally responsive psychology and highlighted the profound impact of racism on mental health.
