🔥 Weak Flames or Failed Ignition? It Could Be Your Gas Supply

When an outdoor fire feature isn’t performing properly, the burner or ignition system often gets blamed first. But the real issue may be gas pressure or gas flow.

Pressure is the force moving gas through the system, while flow is the volume of gas reaching the burner. Even with adequate pressure at the source, undersized piping, long gas runs, regulators, or multiple appliances sharing the supply can restrict delivery and impact performance.

For many HPC Fire Inspired® appliances, general operating ranges are:

🔥 Natural Gas: approximately 3.5–7” WC
🔥 Propane: approximately 8–11” WC

Always follow the specific requirements in the applicable HPC installation manual.

Warning Signs of a Gas Supply Issue

• Weak or low flames
• Small or unstable pilot flame
• Delayed ignition
• Uneven flame distribution
• Unexpected flame dropout
• Flame changes when another gas appliance turns on
• Unusually tall or aggressive flames
• Excessive burner or valve noise

Common causes can include undersized gas lines, excessive run length, multiple appliances competing for capacity, or regulator issues.

More pressure isn’t necessarily better. Excessive pressure can create unstable flames, flame lift, excessive noise, and potentially damage components.

Don’t assume the burner has failed. If performance changes, evaluate the entire gas delivery system—including piping, regulators, connections, total BTU demand, and other connected appliances—before replacing components.

These symptoms don’t prove gas pressure or flow is the problem, but they’re important indicators that the gas supply should be evaluated by a qualified professional.
