Face Painting in Madrid for Labor Day weekend celebrations
08/23/2025
I’ll be hitting my 10 years of face painting next weekend! Never had a logo so been experimenting with ideas on that…
My first event ever was a temp painting job for Jurassic Quest over Labor Day weekend when I lived in Waterloo and was attending community college for graphic design up at Black Hawk Community College. The arts department was given the opportunity to sign up and paint for the weekend. My first day of it I was instantly hooked on wanting to pursue it as a job.
Over the next 5 years I worked different places. In 2016 I started working seasonly during Halloween at The Theatrical Shop in the makeup department where I learned more and more about the different products of paint and had the opportunity to face paint for events in Valley Junction and occasionally would help with makeup for Betty Hill Dancers.
2018 I did my first season at Blank Park Zoo and was given training by the owner of Razz Ma Tazz FacePainting. I also learned how to do glitter tattoos.
This got me to what I feel like was the next level into making a career out of things.
January of 2020 I had the chance to work temporarily for Jurassic Quest well living down in Tucson Arizona. During this weekend my life was changed. I was able to give them a resume of my work and portfolio that had my past five years of experience and was hired on full time. By the end of the week I was getting flown out to Ronake West Virginia where I started my job until Covid-19 rocked the socks of my world.
Things were tough for the next few years as the show shut down and I lost the ability to work gigs and life was changed for the time being.
In 2022 I started painting again and had moved to Manitou Springs Colorado. I worked different events painting for the city.
That April I was struck down by a bad reaction to medication and had to move back to Iowa due to health reasons.
April of 2023 I got back on track with my health and began painting again freelancing different events and farmers markets.
2024 my summer was spent getting to work at the Blank Park Zoo again and in that time I learned airbrushing as well. Spent that October with the opportunity doing makeup for Phantom Fall Fest at AdventureLand.
Now it’s 2025:) I’ve worked an event every weekend since Mother’s Day this Summer and am freelancing again. I love it still more than even when I started. There’s rough days here and there but at the end of the day it’s what I want to be doing and wouldn’t trade it for the stability of a 9-5.
So that’s my story of how I got to where I am now.
