The cuticle, the hair’s outermost protective layer, maintains the integrity of cortex (middle layer) which houses 90% of the hair’s strength, melanin, elasticity, texture, and weight.
Damage to the cortex, usually following cuticle failure, can lead to brittle hair, loss of elasticity, and breakage.
