Pool therapy beats physical therapy for chronic low back pain - Harvard Health
Aquatic (pool) therapy and physical therapy are two treatments that can reduce pain. But which is better for chronic low back pain? A small randomized trial published online Jan. 3, 2022, by JAMA Network Open suggests that buoyancy has the edge. Researchers took a group of 113 people with chronic low back pain, ages 18 to 65, and divided them into two groups. The people in one group had two 60-minute physical therapy sessions per week; the others took part in two 60-minute sessions of pool exercises per week. After 12 weeks, about half of the people in the pool therapy group showed an improvement of two to 5 points in their pain scores (depending on the scale), compared with only 21% or fewer in the physical therapy group. And a year later, the pool exercisers still felt better than the land exercisers. Researchers say pool therapy seemed to have a greater influence than physical therapy on pain, function, quality of life, sleep quality, and mental state.

Who doesn’t want to live in a finer world? Bernice King reminds us that her father wasn’t so beloved in his days of activism. In fact, most of the country didn’t approve of his cause. We’d like to think we’ve come a long way but the reality is there’s still much work to be done to arrive at equality for all. ✊🏼✊🏾✊🏿

Dr. Kristin Robinson uses the warm water and underwater treadmill of a HydroWorx therapy pool to provide sensory stimulation to the entire body, providing pain management for those with conditions such as multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy. The buoyancy of the water also helps with balance, lumbar stabilization, mobility and personal confidence.
The ideal complement to neurological aquatic therapy, our hydro massage system produces a focused, deep, penetrating massage can help reduce overall discomfort by localizing the areas of pain. The massage hose allows you to adjust the position and strength of the massage for your optimal level of comfort.
During neurological pool therapy, at about 60% weightless, physical therapists can focus on re-teaching lost motor skills. The variable speed underwater treadmill facilitates gait training at any water level with speeds from 0 to 8.5 mph in .2 mph increments.

Have you heard of diaphragmatic breathing? Diaphragmatic breathing, also called "abdominal breathing" or "belly breathing", encourages full oxygen exchange — that is, the beneficial trade of incoming oxygen for outgoing carbon dioxide. Not surprisingly, this type of breathing slows the heartbeat and can lower or stabilize blood pressure.

Wishing you all a healthy and Happy Thanksgiving! 🙏🏽

Should you get a standing desk?
Should you get a standing desk? Dr. Tiff recommends an adjustable height desk and standing or sitting for no more/less than an hour or so at a time.
Also, getting an anti fatigue mat and wear supportive shoes while standing is critical to your health and comfort.
Dr. Kristin Robinson - Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic therapy is especially helpful in treating stroke patients. The water provides a safe place for relearning skills and retraining the body, regardless of the patient’s level of mobility. Some of the benefits of aquatic therapy for stroke patients include:
Improved Mobility: Submersion in water decreases the body weight of an individual by up to 90 percent, making it easier for stroke patients to move without placing stress on their joints.
Greater Strength: It’s possible to gain more strength in less time when exercising in water. The natural resistance provided by moving in water means that every session is a strength workout. Additionally, working out in water makes it easier to target areas of the body that a patient might not be able to on land — for example, a patient whose legs are too weak to support them might not be able to do squats and lunges on land, but they might be able to do so in water.
Pain Relief: Water isn’t just a good exercise environment, it’s also a good pain reliever. The pressure provided by water effectively massages the muscles, reducing pain during and after a session.
Cardiovascular Health: Submersion in water is a great way to increase cardiovascular fitness in a low-impact way. By simply standing in water, the increased pressure on the body forces the heart to work harder to move blood, increasing the heart’s fitness over time.
Balance Training: Since strokes tend to affect one side of the body over another, stroke patients tend to have issues with their balance, making it difficult to walk or perform daily activities. Aquatic therapy can help with this, providing a safe environment for balance training. Hydrotherapy, in fact, is often more effective than land-based training in this area, since water protects the patient from falling as they work through their exercises.
Muscle Relaxation: Muscle spasticity is a common problem in stroke patients, resulting in stiff or rigid muscles that can become painful over time.
