Bird House Gourds.
Last year I had an abundant harvest of amazing birdhouse gourds. I had no idea what I was getting in to when I planted a seedling given to me by my friend Laura. The plant overtook 4 arbors, traversed up and back down and up again and ultimately destroyed several handmade arbors, not engineered to hold hundreds of pounds of suspended beings.
In November they were released from the dead vines and moved to Laura’s dehumidified basement, protected from mice using mothballs. During that drying period they developed a layer of mold and became rock hard.
To create a birdhouse , the gourds are soaked in water and scrubbed of their mold layer. Then they become an open canvas. These gourds can be made into so many useful things.
I am using them for birdhouses and have started drilling holes for nesting birds, releasing the seeds and innards, and decorating to suit the personality of each gourd. Shown here is the progression from plant to birdhouse.
Birds LOVE these, I was gifted one for Mother’s Day and had resident wrens within three days of hanging.
