With Major League Baseball playoffs in full swing, it's important to know that the repetitive motions of baseball can take a toll on the body. Let's take a look at some of the most common baseball injuries due to overuse.

As our celebration continues, we're excited to share, "Do Your Impossible." We're highlighting incredible stories of our patients getting back to what they love when partnering with our physical therapists. Check out this amazing story.

Brady Ramsdell is a quarterback for Rockville High School in Vernon, CT. Last year, Brady suffered a broken tibia that required surgery and physical therapy, which was done at Select Physical Therapy's Vernon center. He worked with Mike Miller, regional director of operations and physical therapist. Brady shared with Mike his goal and they got to work.

Once Brady was cleared to play, he invited Mike to his first game back. Watch the video below to see Brady do his impossible with his therapist proudly watching from the sidelines.

"The light at the end of the tunnel wasn't there for me for a long time," said Brady. It was hard not knowing how all of this would work out and just trusting the process. The light started to show after Mike helped me gain confidence that I would be back. Once I got the confidence, it was time to push myself and Mike pushed me even further."

Steve Lawrence was recommended to attend physical therapy after having surgery to remove a disc in his neck. Therapy was intended to break his pain cycle, increase flexibility and improve strength. Before surgery, which was delayed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Steve experienced persistent pain and his range of motion was on a steady decrease.

Prior to his neck condition becoming too severe, Steve operated his own landscaping business. Unfortunately, he gave up the business to move into more physically-limited work. Steve also had to curtail the activities he enjoys, such as long-distance bike rides and working out at the gym. He was hopeful physical therapy would help him get back to life.

Therapy first began for Steve in May when he saw Adam Peters, market manager, at Select Physical Therapy in Hanover, PA for an initial evaluation. Prior to his appointment, Steve continued to feel high levels of pain and was worried about injuring himself if he wasn’t extremely careful.

A few days later, Steve officially began physical therapy with our Andrea Reese, physical therapy assistant, and interacted with Bill Padoll, physical therapist, and Annette Colgan, patient service specialist.

“Beginning with the intake process with Annette, all interactions have been positive and respectful," said Steve. "The entire staff has been great to work with, but I must acknowledge Andrea specifically. Every appointment has been a milestone of sorts with her dedication to my care.”

Steve hasn’t yet reached his goal of being able to work and return to recreational activities without pain, but he’s taken great strides in the right direction. With each session, Steve believes the goal becomes more attainable. “Andrea always manages to put out the 'fire' in my neck by the end of my appointments,” said Steve. “It allows me to rest and recover from even the most difficult days of work.”

Steve praised Andrea for changing his life, something we're humbled to hear as we celebrate National Physical Therapy Month. “I can’t say enough about Andrea’s resourcefulness and determination in making my recovery possible,” said Steve. “She brings her full attention and skill every day. She provides the positive energy when I can’t quite summon it on my own.”

As therapy rolls on, Steve is realizing how much progress he’s making. “At the end of each work day, I’m still struggling, but I feel great at the end of each physical therapy session, which means I’m able to rest and recover. What I want most is to arrive at therapy ready to move forward without needing repair days.” Steve has now returned to light bike riding and hopes to get back to long-distance rides in the near future.

“I leave my appointments completely different from when I entered, both mentally and physically.”

Congratulations to Amy Stielstra, physical therapist from our Blondell center in Wasilla, AK, for completing the Ironman Alaska Challenge.

When Amy ran her first half marathon at the age of 32, she made it a personal goal that she wanted to complete an Ironman Challenge when she was 40. “It’s one of those goals that you don’t want to tell anyone because it almost seems impossible and you don’t want to fail,” said Amy.

Between training for the Ironman Challenge and juggling work and family, this was a challenging seven months for Amy. She had wonderful support from family and friends throughout her journey, though. “I saw regulars at the pool at 5 a.m., on the road and at the trails day in and day out.” She was physically and mentally drained at the end of each day, but knew it was all going to pay off in the end.

When race day finally arrived, the weather didn’t cooperate. It was rainy, windy and cold for almost 13 hours. Many athletes were unable to finish due to the conditions, but Amy had trained previously in bad weather and was able to endure .

The bike course featured many hills and a 6,000 ft. elevation gain on top of bad weather. Amy ran into another problem on the course when her handlebars nearly fell off her bike sometime during the last 30 miles. She had to screw it back in with her thumb numerous times during her ride, but she never let it stop her.

During her run, at approximately mile eight, Amy began to experience back spasms, but was again prepared with Ibuprofen and Naproxen in her “baggie of goods”. Around mile 13, Amy was drained and wasn’t sure if she could finish. With the rain pouring down, she walked a few short stints through aide stations and up hills until at mile 18, she told herself she only had eight miles left and wanted to run the rest. “I got a runner’s high and went for it. I never pass people running and I passed a lot on those last eight miles and I was still smiling!”

Not only did Amy finish her first Ironman Challenge, she finished in the top 25% and a full hour faster than she expected. “I know anything is possible when you put your heart, mind and soul into it. And it helps with an awesome team behind you. I had the best crew ever,” said Amy.

Congratulations on this amazing accomplishment, Amy!

Concussion – Unsafe at Any Impact?

Concussion isn’t just a sports injury thing. It can happen in many ways that you may not be aware of. Check out our blog on concussion myths that just aren’t true.

Concussion – Unsafe at Any Impact? One of the myths about concussion is that it takes a big blow to the head to get one. A second is that getting your “bell rung” or “seeing stars” isn’t a big deal. They’re just that. Myths.

Dave Glastetter was a patient at our Select Physical Therapy center in Cape Girardeau, MO. On Sept. 3, 2021, while at work Dave’s legs were run over by a lull, which is a combination of a forklift and tractor. He was immediately airlifted to Barnes Jewish Hospital with bilateral femur fractures, fractured pelvic bones and two fractures in his left foot. After six days, Dave was taken to St. Louis Rehabilitation Institute where he stayed for two weeks. Upon discharge, he was in a wheelchair and unable to move his legs.

Dave enjoys hunting, fishing and hiking. He likes to stay active by taking care of his land and builds houses for a living, so life was greatly disrupted by his injury. Dave was immobilized and needed help with daily tasks such as dressing, bathing and cooking.

Eventually, Dave began PT and worked with our Jake Pattengill, multi-site manager and physical therapist, and Garrett Alsup, physical therapy assistant.

“Jake and Garrett were instrumental in devising a physical therapy regime that would help me regain mobility and return to my life,” said Dave. “From the beginning, Jake would say ‘Glastetter, I’m not releasing you until we get you back walking and you’re able to do the things you love.'”

Dave has been down a long road over the past year, but seen immense improvement after physical therapy. “Every day I had PT, it gave me hope and confidence that I would walk again and regain my life back,” said Dave. “I’ve always been the person that helped everyone else and it was so uncomfortable to be the person that needed help. Jake and Garrett helped me get back on my feet.”

As his road to recovery continues, Dave is now working construction and taking care of his outdoor chores. “Just being able to get back to my life has meant everything to me,” said Dave.

“I can’t say enough about the Select Physical Therapy team,” said Dave. “From day one, they were working with me toward my end goal of regaining mobility and returning to my daily tasks.”
