Moderate exercise linked to reduced stroke risk in women.
The Los Angeles Times (2/14, Macvean) “Science Now” blog reports that research presented at the American Stroke Association’ s international conference indicated that women who engage in “moderate exercise” may have a reduced “risk of having a stroke.”

On its website, FOX News (2/14, Kwan) reports that investigators “analyzed data from the California Teachers Study, a cohort study of 133,479 female public school teachers and administrators, to see how exercise affected women’s risk for stroke.” The researchers found that “participants who reported doing moderate physical activity in the three years before they enrolled in the study had a 20 percent lower risk compared to women who reported no activity.”

HealthDay (2/14) reports that the investigators “also found that postmenopausal women taking hormone therapy were 30 percent more likely to have a stroke than those who never used hormone therapy, but moderate exercise helped reduce this increased risk.” Additionally, “after women stopped taking hormone therapy, their risk began to fall.” MedPage Today (2/14, Fiore) also covers the story.
