‘Tis the season for Injury Prevention! We hosted a clinic for the @triteamzs triathlon club yesterday. Big takeaways were the 4 major things that cause injuries in triathletes:

1️⃣ Postural dysfunction
2️⃣ Single leg strength & stability
3️⃣Local (not global) core stability
4️⃣ Foot strength & control

Super excited to collaborate with @lesliedegrande for a NEW class for Team Z to address the above areas. Leslie’s “Body Tune Up” class has got it all to reduce injury and improve performance.

2 years of Resurgent!

Today marks 2 years to the day of our opening of Resurgent Sports Physical Therapy! We are incredibly lucky to have impacted so many lives across the Northern Virginia area and hope to continue to do so for years to come!

Over-pronating or letting our arches collapse is a common concern and point of emphasis for runners around the world.

While excessive pronation is a common occurrence, we also have to be aware of the opposite, excessive supination (running on the outsides of our feet).

Our patient came into the clinic with reports of pain on the outside of her ankle, and once we got her on the treadmill it was clear as to why.

In the first picture above, our runner initially presents with increased supination (10 degrees!) on her right side.

When we run, 5 degrees of supination is expected in the rear aspect of the foot to help form a rigid lever to aid in our forward propulsion. For this patient, cueing her to utilize more push-off through her big toe was effective in both reducing her pain and bringing her supination back into a normal range.

In the second picture, we’re able to see a dramatic improvement in her foot position (5 degrees of supination), as well her ability to return to half marathon training that same evening!

Had the opportunity to swing by @potomacriverrunning ‘s brand new store in South Riding. This store is top notch and I’m super excited for the South Riding community to have this gem in their backyard. This location also has Trail running shoes and a dynamic foot scan for improved fit accuracy. Not to mention that some of my favorite people are managing the store @then_came_bronson_ and Annie Lutz. If you are a runner in the area, you should definitely stop by! @joneskrist spread the word and we’ll go together soon!

PT FIRST!

As a direct access state, Virginia allows for its residents to attend physical therapy for up to 60 days without a physician referral. With Physical Therapists being 2x as accurate in their diagnostic skills than a general care physician AND possessing the knowledge to save nearly $5000 dollars per patient in healthcare costs, what’s stopping you from getting PT first??

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization + Cupping Therapy!

- Dr. Martin is seen here utilizing both of the above techniques to assist our athlete in reducing the inner shin pain, commonly known as shin splints, that is keeping him from running at his normal intensity.

What is Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)?
- IASTM is a technique that was developed and is used with the intention of decreasing pain in muscles/fascial structures to allow for more comfortable movement patterns.

What is Cupping Therapy?
- Cupping therapy is a technique that is used similarly to IASTM, in the sense that it can be effective in decreasing muscular pain as well as provide a relief to compressive forces during muscular contraction.

*** Both techniques, when used separately or in conjunction, should be followed up with some form of functional movement or strengthening activity (i.e. running technique, isolated strengthening, etc...) to maximize gains.

PT First!

The clinical accuracy of a PT correctly diagnosing your injury is 2x greater than that of a Non-Orthopaedic Provider (General Care, Pediatric, and Emergency Room Physicians, Podiatrists, Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners).

With Virginia allowing patients to come to PT without a prescription from their physician for up to 60 days, why not skip a step and get treated right away?

Rapid Results!!

In just one session our triathlete demonstrated improved run mechanics that resulted in a more comfortable, sustainable and efficient stride. Through video analysis, in conjunction with our run technique drills, we were able to objectively assess and improve our athlete’s mechanics without her missing a single training session.

Before: Straight knee at initial contact, Over-striding and increased low back extension

After: Improved stride length, “softer” knee (increased knee flexion) at initial contact, and more upright posturing

Welcome our newest Doctor of Physical Therapy, Dr. Aziz Hasan. He grew up in Northern Virginia area playing soccer and football in high school. He remained involved in athletics during college and grad school through coaching football @woodsoncavathletics. Dr. Hasan obtained his doctorate in physical therapy at the University of St. Augustine. He joined the Resurgent Team to focus on working with athletes and to pursue his board certification in sports rehab. He currently enjoys staying active through weightlifting and running.
