Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization + Cupping Therapy!

- Dr. Martin is seen here utilizing both of the above techniques to assist our athlete in reducing the inner shin pain, commonly known as shin splints, that is keeping him from running at his normal intensity.

What is Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)?
- IASTM is a technique that was developed and is used with the intention of decreasing pain in muscles/fascial structures to allow for more comfortable movement patterns.

What is Cupping Therapy?
- Cupping therapy is a technique that is used similarly to IASTM, in the sense that it can be effective in decreasing muscular pain as well as provide a relief to compressive forces during muscular contraction.

*** Both techniques, when used separately or in conjunction, should be followed up with some form of functional movement or strengthening activity (i.e. running technique, isolated strengthening, etc...) to maximize gains.

Watch How we help Lauren @lkhaislip reign her run in and fix her overstride. It’s a Christmas miracle 🎄😂! Overstriding occurs when runners kick their front leg out and straighten their knees (like kicking a soccer ball). A healthy and powerful run consists of 30 degrees of knee bend when you strike the ground. This ultimately reduces impact and gives you improved forward propulsion. Landing on a straight leg can create injury and definitely slows you down. We use the run in place drill to demonstrate what it feels like for your foot to naturally land underneath your body and keep your knees springy & relaxed. To perform this drill- Run in place, Keep your trunk long, give a little lean from your ankle, and feel how efficient your run is with this new form. Merry Christmas & happy running 🎁🏃🏻‍♀️🏃‍♂️!!! #christmasmiracle #rundrills #resurgentsportsrehab #runform #potomacriverrunning #optoutside🌲 #trythistoday

Overstriding is the BIGGEST correlation to injuries in runners. This is a form flaw in which the foot lands really far in front of the body. The farther ahead of your body you land, the higher risk. Check out @lkhaislip Lauren’s HUGE overstride so you can identify what NOT to do. The good news is you CAN fix this! (Yes, even if you have been running like that for decades😉.) Stay tuned tomorrow for our go-to drill to fix this flaw and fix or prevent injuries. @potomacriverrunning #overstride #whatnottodo #laurenreallydoesntrunlkethat #potomacriverrinning #resurgentsportsrehab #runninganalysis

Attention runners! Come out for the DMV running clinic this Sunday December 8th at the University of Maryland. All things running-related hosted by @districttrackclub and @underarmour. I’ll be speaking on the health panel at 3:45 to answer your questions about running injuries. Can’t make it? Post your running injury question here and I’ll help you figure out what’s going on. Running tip of the day: If you are only having pain when you run, the real source of your injury is often the WAY you are running. Poor mechanics can break down tissue, cause pain, and evolve into a chronic injury if not addressed. The take home message: Make sure you are working with a sports injury specialist who analyzes your run AND works with you to optimize your form. #knowledgeispower #runinjuryfree #districttrack #underarmour #resurgentsportsrehab
