“Those fluids went in so fast… I must have been really dehydrated!”
We hear this one all the time, but how quickly your IV bag runs isn’t a measure of how dehydrated you are.
IV flow rate can be affected by things like the size and placement of your IV catheter, the vein being used, your arm position, the height of the IV bag, and the rate set by your nurse.
So if your bag seems to disappear quickly, it doesn’t necessarily mean your body was “soaking it up” because you desperately needed fluids.
Just one of those IV myths that makes total sense until you know what’s actually happening behind the scenes. What other myths should we bust?
