Your business name looks like a very small decision.
It isn't.
When you're starting a massage practice, you may spend weeks thinking about the massage table, oils, website, prices, techniques, room, logo, and social media. Then somebody asks:
“What's the name of your business?”
And suddenly you're stuck.
I've been through this myself. And one thing I've learned is: don't rush the name.
Your business name becomes part of your reputation. People will see it on Google, your website, social media, business cards, reviews, signs, shirts—and hopefully they'll say that name to somebody else when they recommend you.
So give it some time.
Your Business Name Is Your Boat
I like to think about your business as a boat.
You're going to spend years sailing this thing.
There will be beautiful days. There will also be storms. Competition, slow months, difficult clients, expenses, advertising problems, mistakes—you'll experience all of it.
And painted across the side of that boat is your name.
Pick something strong.
Pick something you can grow into.
Pick something you're proud to say.
Because if the name is confusing, impossible to remember, difficult to spell, or has absolutely nothing to do with what you eventually become, you may spend years trying to explain it.
So How Do You Actually Choose a Massage Business Name?
There are several directions you can take.
You can build around your own name. Something like Smith Massage Therapy or Jay's Bodywork. This can work beautifully when you are the brand, especially for an individual practitioner building a local reputation.
You can build around your specialty. If you're known for sports recovery, mobility, relaxation, therapeutic bodywork, or another specific service, the name can give people a clue about what you do.
You can build around the result or feeling. Words connected to movement, restoration, balance, recovery, performance, wellness, or relaxation can communicate what you want people to associate with the business. Just be careful about promising medical outcomes your services can't guarantee.
You can build a completely original brand. This is harder—but potentially powerful. A short, distinctive name may not explain everything on day one, but over time you give that word meaning through your reputation.
That's part of what happened with LifeRX.
The name becomes bigger than the individual service. It becomes an identity.
And finally, you can think bigger than yourself.
Maybe today it's only you and one massage table.
But what happens in five years?
Could you have therapists working with you? Education? Products? Multiple locations? Online programs?
If that's your vision, don't accidentally choose a name that traps the company inside one tiny service forever.
Before You Fall in Love With a Name, Check It
This part can save you a serious headache.
Write down your best candidates and test them.
Say the name out loud.
Tell it to five people and ask them tomorrow if they remember it.
Ask somebody to spell it after hearing it once.
Search Google and Google Maps for similar businesses.
Check whether a practical domain name and social-media handles are available.
And before investing heavily in logos, signs and marketing, search the USPTO trademark database. The USPTO specifically recommends searching for similar trademarks and considering whether the goods or services are related—not merely checking for an identical name.
If you're forming the business in California, you can also use the California Secretary of State business search to investigate existing business names. Trademark, entity-name, domain, and social-handle availability are different things, so checking one doesn't automatically clear the others.
One Simple Test I Like
Imagine somebody just received the best massage they've had in years.
Their friend asks:
“Where did you go?”
Can they remember your business name?
Can they pronounce it?
Can they search it?
Can they tell somebody else without explaining it for five minutes?
That's a good test.
Because branding isn't about creating the fanciest name.
It's about creating something people remember.
And don't become paralyzed trying to create the perfect name either. Businesses evolve. Brands change. I've changed things myself along the journey.
You can make mistakes.
But taking a little more time today can save you a lot of time and money tomorrow.
In this video, Jay will share how to approach naming your massage business, what directions you can take, what mistakes to avoid, and how to think beyond simply finding something that “sounds cool.”

You're building your boat.
Choose a name you're willing to put on the side of it—and then build a reputation strong enough to carry that name through the storms.
