Boss Skool Awareness- Alopecia Awareness Month
Alopecia is a medical term for hair loss, split into non-scarring (often temporary) and scarring (permanent) categories.
Common Non-Scarring Types
Androgenetic Alopecia: Also known as male or female pattern baldness, this genetic and hormonal condition causes a receding hairline or thinning at the crown.
Alopecia Areata: An autoimmune disorder where the body attacks hair follicles, causing round or oval bald patches. Extreme forms include alopecia totalis (total scalp loss) and alopecia universalis (total body hair loss).
Telogen Effluvium: Temporary, widespread shedding triggered by extreme stress, surgery, illness, or rapid hormonal shifts.
Traction Alopecia: Hair loss caused by chronic pulling from tight hairstyles like braids, extensions, or ponytails.
Common Scarring (Cicatricial) Types
Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA): Inflammation that destroys hair follicles, starting at the crown and spreading outward; it most frequently affects Black women.
Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (FFA): A scarring condition that causes the hairline on the forehead and temples to recede.
Lichen Planopilaris (LPP): An inflammatory scalp disorder resulting in smooth, scaly, and sometimes itchy patches of permanent hair loss.
