"Civet ranks among the 20 most important perfume raw materials. Civet Absolute and Tincture are very commonly used perfume materials. They not only present excellent fixative value but most important, they lend a distinct natural-animal note when used with care and with an experienced touch.

There are two different types of lime oil production, expressed and distilled. There are also two main types of lime and several sub-varieties, but only one lime has any importance in the lime oil industry: the so-called sour lime, also known as the Mexican Lime or West Indian Lime, obtained from the small tree Citrus Aurantifolia. The sweeter type of lime, another variety of Citrus Aurantifolia, is used only rarely for the production of essential oil. Distilled Lime oil has a sharp, fresh, terpene-like, somewhat perfumery-fruity, citrus-type odor. The oil is very volatile (poor tenacity), but shows increasing sweetness on drying out, the notes becoming more orange-like, less lemon-like. The general impression is that the odor is reminiscent of the odor of fresh limes cut in half and squeezed.

Benzoin Absolute (Resin) -Siam

Benzoin Siam is a natural gum-resin or more aptly a ‘balsamic resin’. It is obtained from a small tree called Styrax Tonkinensis. The resin is obtained from a latex that the tree makes when the bark is wounded. The milky latex solidifies when oxidized and exposed to the natural elements, thus forming the semi-solid Resin collected for use. The hard and brittle resin becomes a yellow-reddish or orange colored to pale brown. The ‘Siam’ nomenclature is usually derived from the trade route (export) through Siam (Thailand). The odor is pleasant, sweet balsamic with a distinct note of Vanillin. Benzoin is often used as a fixative in fine perfumery, in colognes, for ‘prefixation’ prior to the preparations of colognes and lotions etc.

Osmanthus is a small tree in the Oleaceae Family (which Lilac and Jasmine belongs to) found in China and Japan and used as a starting material (Fragrans) in the production of a concrete and an absolute. Often classified as a top note, probably due to its Fruity Family classification, however, it can easily fall in the middle to base note classification as it can last 400 hours on a blotter test strip. This luxuriously elegant material often reminds of dried apricot and is intensely rich with sweet, fruity-floral, slightly spicy, sweet fruity plum, berry, ripe fruit, waxy, leather, honey, woody aroma.

A top note in the fruity family with a sweet, pineapple, fruity, waxy, banana, fusel (hot alcohol), cognac odor. Arctander describes this material as "Sweet-fruity, somewhat pungent, vinous Banana-like odor. Occasionally used in floral fragrance compositions: Apple blossom, Peach blossom, Magnolia, Sweet Pea, etc."

Origanum is a middle to base note in the herbaceous family. Its odorous properties consisting of thyme, green, herbal, spicy, camphor, phenolic & woody. “Spanish or Israeli Origanum oil possess a strong, tar-like, herbaceous odor but very refreshing odor. The top-note is slightly green-camphoraceous, herbaceous and the body is rich, dry-woody, somewhat reminiscent of cade on phenols, medicinal. On drying out, the odor becomes sweeter but remains phenolic-dry and woody.
