The grounding technique that can be very helpful in reducing anxiety. This exercise is centered around using your five senses and serves as a useful tool in moments of stress.
Here's how it works:
Five things you can see: Look around and identify five things you can see. It could be anything in your immediate surroundings.
Four things you can touch: Find four things you can touch. Focus on the texture of these objects.
Three things you can hear: Listen carefully and note three sounds, whether they are near or far.
Two things you can smell: Identify two scents. They might be cooking smells, a candle, or fresh air.
One thing you can taste: Finally, identify one thing you can taste. It could be gum, a drink, or a small snack.
To help you remember the sequence of this exercise, consider the harmonic phrase: Stop over Thinking, be Happy, Start Taking steps to invite more joy and growth into your life.
I encourage you to practice this technique whenever you feel anxious, and I hope it brings you a sense of calm and focus.
