Part Time Assistant Curator- Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo
Job Duties
The Part Time Assistant Curator position is scheduled to work 3 days a week (Saturday, Sunday and 1 weekday) for a maximum of 28.5 hours per week. The primary responsibility of the position is to act as the Zoo Manager for three days a week. The Zoo Manager is responsible for the daily oversight of the 10-acre AZA accredited Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo. The Zoo houses 69 species and 250 specimens and sees 60,000 visitors a year. The Zoo is the training ground for the Santa Fe College Zoo Animal Technology Program, the only program of its kind housed on the grounds of an AZA accredited Zoo. As such, the part time Assistant Curator will be responsible for the oversight of 60-120 students who are just starting their career as Zookeepers. This oversight requires an enormous amount of patience and an extremely professional demeanor. Additional responsibilities are listed below.

Official Title (Position Designation): Adjunct Assistant Professor, Zoo Animal Technology. (Part time Assistant Curator). This position will not convert to a full-time position.
Hours and Schedule: 28.5 hours per week, scheduled to work 3 days a week (Saturday, Sunday and 1 weekday)
Compensation: Salary is $26,276.70 for the year
Benefits: 9 weeks of vacation a year (~27 days)
Start Date: May 10, 2020
Qualifications:
Required: An Associate's degree in Zoo Animal Technology or a Bachelor's degree in any of the qualifying fields of Biology, Zoology, Wildlife Ecology, and/or Animal Management. A criminal background check will be conducted.
Preferred: At least four years of professional experience within a zoological facility working directly with exotic animals. Supervisory experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The Adjunct Assistant must have the ability to deliver a high level of interactive customer service, develop and maintain collaborative relationships throughout the organization, communicate effectively and possess proficient computer skills, including familiarity with the Microsoft Suite of Office Applications. The successful applicant must be willing to work a flexible schedule at multiple sites, as well as demonstrate the ability to work well with students, faculty and staff at all levels within a diverse, multi-cultural, collaborative environment.
Supervision - Maintain the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo up to 3 days a week
Act as the only supervisor on some weekend days, holidays and during college closure, managing 60 – 120 Zookeepers
Respond to emergencies; direct responses as needed
Handle guest service questions, concerns or complaints
Verify receptionist money for the day
Lock/unlock facility, ensure student safety
Manage animal care
Answer Zookeeper questions related to animal procedures
Medicate certain animals
Handle/care for animals as needed, including mammals, birds, herps (including venomous reptiles)
Create an end of day report, documenting all animal, Zookeeper and guest issues
Inform General Curator of any issues or problems which arise
Travel locally and regionally, driving a Zoo Vehicle
Pick up other essential supplies from local vendors
Transporting animals to and from the vet school, airport or other locations
Assist the General Curator and 2 Full time Assistant Curators with the animal collection (69 species & 250 specimens)
Assist with Special Events as needed
Assist Curators with habitat maintenance and construction.
Maintain animal records through online record keeping system (ZIMS).

HIRING! - UF IFAS Extension in Miami Dade County is hiring! We have an Urban Horticultural Program Specialist position open. This position is funded by Miami-Dade County.

This is a professional educational position with UF IFAS Miami Dade Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program (Partnership of UF/IFAS and Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department). An employee in this class is responsible for conducting landscape irrigation assessments for residential and commercial properties as part of the Florida Yards & Neighborhoods, Landscape Irrigation Rebate Program (LIRP). Other responsibilities include assisting in the collection and submission of invoices from all participants of the LIRP to the Miami-Dade Water & Sewer Department. Additional responsibilities include assisting in developing and conducting educational classes, workshops and public outreach events for Miami-Dade County residents; preparing reports and performing other related work as requested and assigned by the Florida Yards & Neighborhoods Supervisor and County Extension Director.

Ideal candidate will possess adequate knowledge of principles and practices of sustainable landscaping and irrigation technologies appropriate for south Florida. Experience in developing educational materials, writing publications and ability of teaching is required. Proficiency in using computer applications such as Word, Power Point, Excel, and social media is needed. Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, verbally and in writing is required. Good communication skills in person, in writing, via email, phone and via various social media is required. Considerable knowledge of Cooperative Extension Educational programs is preferred. Ability to keep records and prepare reports and physical ability to sufficient perform assigned duties is required. Ability to work in a multicultural settings and flexible work schedule (some weekends) is required. Ability to work outdoors for a prolonged period is required. Valid Florida driver license is required.
