Spring is one of my favorite seasons. I love seeing the first signs of green poking through the soil. But spring is also the time of year when people’s allergies start acting up. The trees are blooming, the pollen takes flight, and the annual ritual of itchy eyes and sneezing begins again. Here are three of my favorite natural remedies for easing allergy symptoms:

1. Quercetin
Is a natural compound found in citrus fruits, dark berries, and red wine and has been shown to stabilize the membranes of mast cells and to reduce the release of histamine. The dose is generally 500 milligrams twice a day.

2. Butterbur
Scientists have found compounds in this plant that reduce smooth muscle constriction in the lungs and shrink swollen nasal membranes. Purchase a product standardized to provide 7.5 milligrams petasin per 50 milligrams of extract and FREE of pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Take 50 mg twice daily.

3. Nettle Leaf
Researchers have found that compounds within nettle leaves inhibit the release of histamine, which causes nasal swelling and itching. In a randomized double-blinded study of 90 people found that 600 milligrams a day of was more effective than placebo for relieving allergy symptoms.

Just indigestion, or is it something more? Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a common disorder that affects between four and five million people in the United States each year, accounting for roughly 10% of medical costs for all digestive disorders.

Human beings have been in relationship with the green world since the beginning of time. Our lives are dependent upon the plants. They recycle carbon dioxide and generate oxygen, providing the very air we breathe. Almost by magic it seems, they are able to convert sunlight into energy and then use soil and water to bring us a vast array of fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, nuts, fiber for cloth, wood for building, and, of course, medicine. Using milder treatments to treat many of our everyday health problems should be our first choice.

The body is well designed for self-healing. Most of the time, all it needs is support as it tries to restore its equilibrium. Hippocrates believed that a physician's primary role was to remove any obstacles that impeded the body's natural ability to get better. I agree. Many of the obstacles getting in the way of health today are poor diet, lack of exercise, unhealthy relationships, chronic stress, and an underfed spiritual life. Illness is always best treated before it begins. Being healthy is our birthright, and it is also our responsibility.

My Pain Away Oil is olive oil infused with St Johns wort flowers. It supports pain using a blend of essential oils, and the St. Johns wort promotes peripheral nerve healing as well. I have used it almost daily since my knee surgery in May and it has been so soothing especially on my nerve endings as they started firing again. Also the numbness is improving at a remarkable rate. I have 1oz bottles for $6, message me if you would like some. Thank you and Be Well, Wendy

10 Essential Oil Myths vs. Facts by Dr. Robert Pappas

weedemandreap.com We're busting essential oil myths! We even called in an expert, Dr. Rober Pappas of Essential Oil University.

[03/28/16]   The Quality of Essential Oils
By Jade Shutes, BA, Dipl. AT., Cert. Herbalist
Firstly, to my knowledge the term ʻtherapeutic gradeʼ arose during the 90ʼs and did not exist prior to that time. It was invented by some very clever marketers who wanted people to believe that there were somehow therapeutic grade essential oils and then all others.

Karla McLaren, M.Ed.

So, I have a question. In the social media world, I'm seeing a regular pattern of people gathering together and increasing their sense of community by making other people wrong or inhuman. Gathering together in groups to shame and dehumanize others is the dark side of empathy that I talk about in the final chapter of The Art of Empathy.

I actually fell into it yesterday by posting (privately) a picture of a clock that made fun of the fears and reactions of school workers in Texas. Oh, funny me, mocking people I've never met -- when I know that mockery and shaming have terrible effects, and tend to make people defend and increase their behavior rather than change it. So I'm calling myself out.

Have you found groups or communities who work to understand rather than attack things like racism, intolerance, sexism, ableism, seemingly opposing political views, and so forth? Have you found people who can maintain their empathy and full humanity in the face of conflict and trouble? I'm thinking of Restorative Justice and mediation, certainly, but what else? I need to find more empathic online communities, friends!

[09/17/15]   How many of us really tune into the effects stress has on our bodies? Recently I had an experience which allowed me to feel this directly. It has been a summer of unusually high stress due to the death of my father, the work and changes brought on by this, and the grief associated with loosing him. I thought I was doing well until a confrontation with a coworker occurred one day. By the end of the day I was sick. My spirit, integrity and truth had been attacked and my body responded. Was the inappropriate attack the single cause of my illness, no. Was it the last assault my immune system could take, absolutely. It pushed me over the edge and held on for weeks. Stress depletes us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. This incident clearly taught me how interactions with others effect us deeply on many levels. What a wonderful and painful lesson, I will have more compassion and understanding when I see others going through difficult times. I am grateful for this new awareness and grateful for return of good health. I feel we need to show extra compassion, understanding and patience for people who are under great amounts of stress and those who are grieving a loss.

St John's wort, beautiful yellow flowers have small oil glands which when infused makes the most beautiful red oil. I use it in my pain blends and salves because of it's anti-inflammatory properties. Easy to do and so healing.
