15-Month Quarantine Growout Before & After Transformation | May 26th, 2021.

I received an email 📧 notification from on Monday 2 days ago which was my 29th Birthday 🥳 that May 19th is National Barber Mental Health Awareness Day💈This is near & dear to me because is so important, it is not just that Barbers & Cosmetologists often serve as Therapist for their Clients, but arguably more importantly that downhill Mental Health is rampant in our Community (the Barber/Cosmetology Community), with so many factors as 1) Covid-19 severely affecting the Salon Economy, 2) many of us coming from low-income and/or broken childhood homes, 3) many of us coming from minority communities {female, immigrant, non-white, lgbt, etc}, 4) the overall stress of being in the industry, and many more contributing factors. These days more than ever I am honestly feeling the stress & anxiety of the high possibility of Mental Health Discrimination in a Salon Employment Situation (Did I not last in previous jobs because of my “weird” personality?....When in reality I am high-functioning on the autistic spectrum & struggle with bipolar/anxiety...The thought constantly lingers in my mind over my head) If it’s real then it is an unspoken invisible discrimination that is almost impossible to prove. As we are taught in the Mental Health Community: You can only control the actions of yourself & not others. Employers may go unpunished for this type of discrimination (the world isn’t fair, this is nothing new, what can we do?) the way I can proactively prevent this from happening to me in the future is to promise Myself to always try my best to keep my Mental State as Healthy as Possible. Social Cues & Social Skills may not come easy to me being on the spectrum. But hey, I’m still here & I’m still trying. And that’s what counts.
